Pivot hook off warding

Postby dauce » 5 Aug 2012 15:44

Is it normal to pivot the hook off the warding of the lock when SPP? Ive read that some recommend pivoting more in the air using your wrist. I only ask because my practice lock is getting a very minor groove indentation on the warding from the pick. It seems to be a convenient place to pivot from, especially when a bit more force is needed.

The way I hold the pick is with one finger against the face of the cylinder and kinda levering it off my finger. Your way is fine, just do whatever you're comfortable with. Just be careful not to stress the pick too much when levering it that way, cos it's very easy to go overboard especially when frustration sets in :)

Sometimes I use the warding like a fulcrum to pivot the pick, sometimes I use the technique Solomon described pivoting it off your fingertip. Just depends on the lock: whether that makes it easier to pick it, or whether it's a lock where I need to try to avoid leaving any tool marks.

And yes, it's common to start getting marks and grooves worn in the warding and the area around the keyway of practice locks. I've seen some heavily warded practice locks that at the face of the plug almost look like they have NO warding since it's all been worn down from years of picking.

Thanks much. Both answers make sense. I actually have some locks that it is difficult to pivot off of the warding just due to too much space.
