Padlock isle at home depot

Someone gave me a $50 gift card to home depot. I dont shop there but stopped in yesterday. There is nothing i want or need, but i wanna use the card up before i lose it lol. I went to the houselock/padlock isle. Wow they have quite a selection. Lots of Masterlock and Brinks variety. Everything from $6 to $30! Do you guys think its worth buying several from there or are they all too similiar in the end (as far as the potential skill i could gain from them)?

They sure did look pretty though;) i didnt so much consider the door locks, mainly because its a pain to mount them and im very new so padlocks seem to be still fun.

Do you guys pick up locks from big-box stores like these? If there Are any particular gems let me know!

go ahead and get a couple door locks and a few padlocks, they are good for practice.

You can find some decent padlocks there. If you have the gift card, fire away. However, you will probably find them cheaper online. I typically go there looking for any clearance locks. Sometimes they sell old displays when a lock line is no longer made, those are nice because you don't need to mount them as they already are!

For door locks, I would check your local Habitat for Humanity Restore. I get keyless knobs/deadbolts there for $2 without keys and $4 with. Rarely there will be a padlock, but you might get lucky.

$50 bucks? awesome! how fun to have that to buy locks with. I guess i would a double cylinder deadbolt, and a couple padlocks. You have nothing to lose and later you can sell them and end up with cash in pocket!

You could buy a new lock for something important, and practice on the old lock.

Ed- some great ideas here. I already put an add on CraigsList for old locks that I am willing to kick a few bucks for. I will go today and try the line of stores you are referring to (around here I think they call them salvation army or some such).

I was also thinking about calling the local gym. Funny thing is the first lock that got me interested in picking was from a lost-and-found table at the gym. It was an old combination lock.
