Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

how to lock this door?

Postby lockdude101 » 29 Aug 2012 11:41

Ive got a really troubling issue here, Ive got a door I cant really seem to figuere what kind of lock would lock it, it needs to be keyed on at least one side. I've attached some pictures, I will nominate whoever gets this for a Nobel prize !

You should be able to lock it without too much trouble, though you are going to have a very hard time actually making it secure...

If it only needs to be locked, and doesnt need to be elegant, the easiest way to do it would be with one of those padlock hinge latches, like you see on sheds and things.

It looks like the door doesn't butt up against a wall when its closed, is this correct?

How nice does it have to look and would your landlord mind if you drilled holes in the door?

If it's your door and you can drill into it, a quick and dirty way would be to mount this on the outside: Image

I think you can probably "get" how it works by looking at the pieces in the photo. 1 part mounts to the door frame, then the lock mounts to the door. They sell it with key holes on both sides, so you can lock the room, or use a key on the inside to lock yourself in a room.

The other way is to mortise out a hole in the door for an Adams Rite MS1850 hookbolt, and mount a piece of angle iron to the wall inside the room that the hook bolt would hook onto. Inside you would get a thumb turn, and on the outside you could install a mortise cylinder of your choosing.

like this: Image

hope that gives you some good ideas. I have a photo at home of an Adams Rite hook bolt and angle iron locking a door just like yours. I'll try to upload tonight

@lockdude101:

It is clear that "inside" is within the space you want to protect, but what is "outside" this room... It kind of matters which side of the door you want the lock keyed on, as "outside" would make the most sense to protect the inside space...

Sadly your door was designed to be decorative and provide for privacy but nothing at all in the way of security, it will have various vulnerabilities no matter which of the options described by squelchtone you use... The only one which wouldn't expose the lock to the outside of the door would be using an Adams Rite type lock which would only have a cylinder or thumb turn exposed on either face of the door where the rim type lock will have its mounting screws exposed unless you are going to use sex bolts and fill the door with holes and would have to be installed on the "outside" face of the door unless you want to get really ugly with angle iron which can be attached to structure along the entire height of the opening to be sturdy enough to mount the retention piece of the rim lock to on the inside of the door...

Using any sort of padlock would not be wise, as you could be locked "in" accidentally (or on purpose) and that would not be good...

Is this door yours in your own house which you own or is this in some kind of rental unit like squelchtone asked ? Also why must this door be locked, sometimes the reason for why is much more telling than needing to know how...

In my experience, sliding/pocket doors are difficult to lock effectively.
You could look into an Octopod lock.
It can be mounted several ways.

I will assume that it is an interior door. Unless you are protecting original Picasso paintings,
it should keep an annoying roommate or little sister out.

I don't recommend it for burglar resistance though.

Similar to what squelchtone posted, the Lockwood 355, when the door is closed you can not get to the screws to undo the lock, you would have to keep the outside part deadlocked though.

Another option and what would look neater, screw a length of wood onto the wall so the door has something to but up against and then fit a cavity lock.

The more information we have the better..

How thick is the door, and what is it made of ?? (Mortise a lock in ?)
What is the wall made of ?
How many times a day will this door be locked ?
Will it have to be convenient to open ?? (floor locks like on glass doors ?)
How secure does it have to be ? (simple plunger lock?)
Roll down gate lock ?

How many times a day will this door be locked ?

Thinking outside the box...

Glad someone posted to this thread, reminded me to post these pics of a similar door with an Adams Rite hook bolt installed. Would not stop a determined attacker, but if done right could keep a room mate out.

Would probably have to use some one way screws on that angle bracket so someone couldn't just unscrew the bracket and open the door.

good ideas everyone, keep em coming

Think a bit out of the box...

The lock doesn't have to be near the door handle..

I say we stop thinking, the OP hasnt logged back in since he posted the question.. more info from him would probably help us figure out something to meet his needs. Like which side needs to be keyed, is someone locking it for the day or is something locking them selves in for the night, etc, etc.

Plan 1. I like the hook bolt or the pocket door locks. But, I would mount a piece of hollow metal to the brick wall as a door stop and cut the bolt hole into the side of it. The tubing can be permanently mounted to the wall and painted so it isnt even noticeable.

Plan 2. Install a screw in, vending machine type T-handle lock on the left side of the door pictured. It would screw into a threaded receptacle mounted into the brick.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
