Computer key cylinder Lock? (dimple locks in Egypt)

Postby aelassy » 27 May 2012 8:14

I am learning lock picking, still a noob, and ultimately want to learn how to pick locks like these as they are very common here (Cairo, Egypt)

I understand its a yale lock, but plz check the picture link I posted. The holes in the key and edges that moves the pins are on the side of the key, having several parallel channels not just ones like regular yale. Can these be picked like regular Yale? Would a regular pick set be of use with these? And why are they named "computer" locks? I could only find that term on chinese web sites and alibaba.com?
I have not been able to determine their technical name, only through google searching was I able to find a pic
Thanks in advance

Reason: Added helpful search text to your topic title. don't trust Chinese sourcing cites for lock names, Engrish isn't always correct.

Try searching for dimple lock / dimple picks.

For the locks you'll be using to learn, a smallish half-diamond or half-ball will be sufficient. I'm not sure if the dimple pick set is an absolute necessity even for better locks, either. Maybe some of the folks who've pick more than I have can weigh in.

I don't believe that's the ideal pick set for this lock. There isn't enough room with the warding to get those paddle picks into the lock, I believe those are meant for things like Mul-t-lock or Kaba dimple locks, but Klom / DX makes a great rake for those Yale locks, it looks like this:

Those picks are great for raking those locks open quickly.

Here is a set from Deal Extreme, there are several dimple rakes included:

I've always considered these cheap dimple locks to have a small Mul-t-lock classic keyway but they are not pin-in-pin, just a normal set of pins that touches the flat side of the key, which blows a lot of minds when people first see a key like that.

What are the laws in Egypt on owning lock picks? Are there locksmith shops or do most people buy locks at a local shop that also sells or fixes other things?

Thanks,

Squelchtone

cyrano is on to something, and you can make your own picks, its not hard to do but you must find metal that will work well,
that is probably a matter of knowing what you can find where you are at, or there are some internet sites that sell metal for DIY projects,
Mcmasters metals might be the name of one of them if memory serves.
