Hidden shackle padlocks

Postby denrecnoc » 19 Sep 2012 20:54

Hello,

Looking at hidden shackle locks for outdoor movable storage ... most of these locks are designed to be bolt cutter resistant and try to hide the external door hardware & clasps ...

the type of padlock I have been looking at use a hockey puck design which hides some of the door locking hardware.

The only less expensive found that denoted to be bump proof and pick resistant was the Master Lock hockey puck padlock.

Hidden shackle locks are designed more or less for remote locations, moveable storage units, cargo trailers, etc. to prevent unauthorized entry through cutting, sawing, grinding, etc.

The locks i am looking at come in a set of three and are keyed alike ... most run around $25.00 each ... ~$75.00 for a set of three.

Is anyone here failure with picking this style lock? I am wondering how easy it is to pick or bump the less expensive heavy duty shrouded padlocks .... would Master Lock hockey puck be a better choice for the hockey puck style lock ... ?

The more expensive ones such as made by Medico are around $100.00 each ...

From experience, puck locks, when installed properly on the proper hasp are difficult to pick.
mostly due to the fact that is puts you in an awkward position. Most of the time, the lock is upside down and you have to kneel uncomfortably on hard ground with your hand above your head.

With the lock in hand however, it picks easier.

Medeco cylinders are much harder to pick but if you were to' let's say, secure a shed at the cottage
half way up a mountain and miles from civilization, a thief may find a chain saw to be a better tool

It really depends on what and where you will be using it/them.

well yes I thought about saws ... and other equipment .. torches, saws, grinders, etc. I don't think there are many padlocks that can withstand 4000 degrees produced from Acetylene and oxygen gas. ...

I guess part of my question was about the Master Lock padlocks with bump proof technology ...

is this type of lock actually bump proof and harder to pick? ...

"is this type of lock actually bump proof and harder to pick? ..."

I don't bump locks so I don't know. My opinion is that it maybe bump RESISTANT but they
pick like the average master.

If the picking and bumping is your main concern, go for the Medeco.
They are much harder to pick and I've never seen or heard of them having been bumped.
Key blanks are harder to get and in some cases highly restricted.

Visit your local locksmith, go see what they can offer.

its difficult to pick lock that are not freely moving so you can get a frontal look at the keyway, hockey pucks while many versions are not hard to pick, can be difficult if the keyway approach is obstructed, this can be overcome by customizing both the pick and the tensor to fit the approach,
If you are armoring a door with something like a thick steel plate, there are things that can make it more resistant to the oxyactl sparkle wrench, such as an aluminun plate behind it with a lead plate behind that,
the aluminum plate spreads the heat and the lead boils, when the cutting torch breaks through, a squirt of liquid lead can shoot out and put the torch out and foul the cutting tip.
things like this were once used in safes, but now its usually illegal.
so Im just mentioning it.

@raimundo: it just figures that it would be against the law to secure your own stuff in a manner likely to disfigure someone trying to rip you off. Seriously, how lame. I would be happy as can be if a would be burglar got a face full of molten lead while trying to get my stuff. Stupid country.
I punched punctuation right in the face!
