Masterlock 930 stuck halfway/need some help

Postby rerun » 25 Oct 2012 17:16

Hello fellow pickers. A friend of mine lent me a brand new masterlock 930 to try my skills on, as he has no use for it at the moment. After a half hour of trying to SPP my way to victory I finally got it using a short hook and a fairly small TOK wrench i made just for this lock. As I was turning the plug to complete the win my TW started to bend, being to small/flimsy to completely turn the cylinder (something I should have known considering how much force is needed to open these locks).

So now the lock is stuck at about 180 degrees and I have no idea what to do. I cannot insert the key because the pins are set in place. I've tried to finish turning it to open with a stronger wrench but it's stuck in a way that I feel like if I use any more force to turn it somethings gonna break and I'll owe my buddy a new lock. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

If it's stuck at 180 degrees, the driver pins are probably pushing into the bottom of the keyway. Just take a tension wrench or a diamond pick with a flat bottom and push all the drivers back into the bible and turn it back.

Two things can happen to lock up your cylinder in this situation.
First, as already suggested, the top pins have moved into the space at the bottom of the keyway that is normally filled by the bottom of the key itself. Solving this is just as easy as putting in the back of a diamond pick, (or any flat straight pick) that will push all of the top pins back even with the shear line.
Second, this type of padlock cylinder is usually manufactured by drilling the upper pin chambers from the bottom of the cylinder. Therefore there are holes that your bottom pins have slipped into. You must turn the padlock so that gravity pulls all the bottom pins back into the plug. You might have to tap it some or wiggle the cylinder if they have pressure on them.

To complete the restoration to normal you must do both of the above at the same time.

Have fun

You didn't say if you have the shackle open. If so there is a screw at the bottom of the shackle hole. Uscrew that screw and the cylinder will pop out. Follow the above directions to reset.

What I don't get is how did you get it turned that far?
Normally it stops just past quarter turn.

I suspect he means 90 degrees.

Isn't that only because the key would hit that piece over the plug? Without the key, I think it would be free to turn past that.

Came into work one day, and a guys lock on his cart (just a chain around his cart/work bench so it didn't grow legs overnight) was like that. It was kind of a pain to get it rotated back where it should be... The shackle was closed, BTW. I forget what model it was, some Master.

Look at the picture - it's rotated 180 degrees.

If the shackle isn't open after the cyld is turned way past the stop the key hits to limit it rotation it will never be open :)

So yes the answer above is correct it would be top pins are holding it and or the bottom pins are coming out the bottom holes. Probably easiest to unscrew the screw take off the bottom plate see if it is one or both. If it is the bottom pins make sure all of them are still in there before you rotate it back to the top.

It turned out one of the bottom pins way in the back was stuck so I had to use heavy tension whilst pushing down on the pin like all hell. happy to say the lock is now back to normal and still working as intended. Much thanks to all the advice given, particularly Raymond. You guys saved me about $30 8)
