Need pick help for SFIC to control line

Postby i_b_larry » 4 Nov 2012 1:58

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie here and I am looking for help with a problem. I recently purchased six Master Locks with SFIC's on eBay. All six locks are keyed differently but appear to be from the same source. I did not get a control key but since the locks all seem to have come from the same place I assume that there is a single control key for all of them.

The cores are six-pin MBS cores with a Best "K" keyway. I have been advised that MBS cores were manufactured and sold by a Best descendant.

I have a locksmith ready who can decode the pins to make a control key but he admits that he cannot pick locks. So I need some way or someone who can pick at least one of the cores to the control line and remove the core from the lock body.

My own lock picking skills are pretty low. I've tried to pick Best cores in the past with no success, so I do not really think I am up to the task of picking to control line and removing the core.

Is there anyone out there who can help me?

I'd be happy to pick those for you, just bring them to me...
Fill in your profile location, maybe there's somebody who lives a bit closer who can help you too.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the offer but I am in Phoenix, Arizona in the USA. I would love to drop these off with you the next time I am in Italia but since the closest I have ever come to being there was studying Latin for two years in high school and working on FIAT's for about 10 years.

Hello i_b_larry, welcome to LP101...

There is a member in Tucson who recently joined the site also who has been posting up a storm since joining a couple of months ago... He seems to know his stuff really well... His name on the site is GWiens2001

Perhaps you could contact him via PM about your locks or maybe he will see this thread and reply...

I can certainly give it a shot. I am still trying to get my American 3200 padlocks with Best cores to control line. Have picked them all to the operating line several times, but never to the control shear. Have succeeded in impressioning them to the operating line (all keyed alike).

Some locks will be pinned easier than others. Have a Falcon (Best clone) SFIC that picks very easily to the control position, and impressioned both keys for it.

The Best SFIC locks from the same source, but may be keyed completely differently, or may be part of a master keyed system. If they are from the same end-user, they may have the same control key. If not, they will likely have different control keys.

If you want to send me a lock to attempt ND opening, send me a PM.

Well, the closest I've ever been to Arizona is I'm reading your message, so we're on the same boat :)
I read in your other post you solved the problem the right way. Nice choice.

Cheers :)

If you cannot get them picked, (thats a hard pick), you can pull the face of the core off above the plug, this will reveal the front of the control sheer line and you can take a shim and shim it from front to back, turn and remove then if it was keyed up properly in the first place you pull the pins out and the top pins will tell you the control key (assuming each cylinder adds up to 23) and kut that key and hope that all the locks have the samr control key

Doc, that's a course of action I had not previously considered. I will keep it in mind but I do not think I will do that for this project.

I have a total of six cores installed in six padlock bodies. I have operating keys for each and each is keyed differently. I have no control (change) key. I suspect that these six are all master keyed and have the same change key as they clearly came from the same source. I also have lined up the services of someone who can decode these cores if I can remove at least one from its body.

If I had 100 of these, it would not bother me much to sacrifice one core in the name of expedience. I am reluctant to mess up one of six, however, if there is a non-destructive means of getting a core out. Since these are my own locks, time is not an issue as it might be for a locksmith or maintenance person.

In another thead on this forum I described how I once had five Best padlocks with no keys at all. My solution, after years of agonizing, was to drill out the upper lobes and toss the cores as I found that replacements are plentiful and cheap on eBay. That may still be how I eventually handle this set of padlocks.

Right on, i do happen to be a locksmith and i agree, i would keep trying to pick, it doesn't hurt anything,

I have had situations in the past where one core key worked a the whole building and it was lost, so you have two options, drill the core, like you did, or drill the housing just above and left of the plug without hurting the core, then the core can be decoded and a core key can be made, then your good, just walking around with the new core key pulling out cores like butter.

As youself i would try to pick them, i have picked a IC once to the control key ever, and i was just trying to pick it to open the door.

@TheDoc,

Never thought of peeling the face back and shimming from the front. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
