Non destructive removal of non rekeyable padlock cylinder

Postby Nitrous » 12 Nov 2012 14:46

Hi folks,

Has anyone removed the cylinder from a Chenab brass padlock without destroying it?
I was thinking of using dry ice or liquid nitrogen (assuming that the cylinder is simply press fitted into the body of the lock).

I'm interested in gimmicking a padlock, but need to be able to take out some of the pins.

Thanks guys,

Nitrous

Oops. That should have been a cheap brass padlock.

There's a cool tutorial on here about boiling a lock and then throwing it in cold water, or the other way around, it makes the pin stack caps pop out when the metal expands and shrinks rapidly. It should be a sticky, I'll see if I can look it up for you.

Why not extract the chamber caps and just pop new ones in. It used to be a common locksmith skill, and was used on WB and Corbin padlocks amongst others. The manufacturers even would ship the locks empty and you would key to combination and hammer the caps home and smooth out on a belt sander or hand file them.

I tried that once with an ABUS lock.. except i used a torch to heat it up and then plunge it into cold water. I eventually got most of the plugs out but not all; the lock was really old and beaten up so it's probably because nicks or dents in the body stopped them from popping out. I haven't tried the boiling water method, i'll try that next time - a little less hazardous!
