Need safe info

Postby Jedilocksmith » 17 Nov 2012 10:43

I know safes(or how to open safes) are not to be discussed outside of the safe section of this website; But I am not looking for that kind of information. My buddy brought over an old drop safe thinking that I could fix the lock for him. Unfortunately the lock was completely shattered inside and was not fixable. I told him that I could put a new lock on for him but he didnt want to put ANY money into it, so he told me I could keep it...or to scrap it. It looks like its been painted about 101 times so I cant find any info on or in the safe itself anywhere.

So I was just wondering:
How old is this safe?
Can anyone tell me who makes these old safes? Are they still in business today?

--And the most important question....How much is it worth?

Im going to sell it but I have no idea what to ask for it. Ive got $45.00 in the new lock...so i know its worth at least $45.00. lol

I'd bet it's worth about the lock you put in it.

It looks like the hinge was repaired before and the re-locker doesn't appear to be functioning with the new lock.

since the only thing keeping people out appears to be Three 1/4" bolts on the hinge and the lock bolt itself (usually the lock just releases other more substantial bolts that lock the door) , It looks like a 5 minute destructive entry.

It looks home made. I don't think you'll find a brand or serial number.
I have never seen one like it.
In my shop, after fixing the hinge and relocker issues, I would price it a $75.00 final sale, no return.

Looks like a safety deposit box lever lock.

How is it shattered?

Do you have both keys?

Im guessing the re-locker is the part underneath the lock...and no, its not functioning at all with the lock. It doesnt even look like its complete. Is there a part that connects the two or does it call for a different type of lock? Im thinking the lock that is on there now was retro fitted on there at some point.

Yep, it is a safety deposit lever lock. Yes i have both keys, it actually came with 1master key and 2guard keys. The one you see in the picture is the new lock, its the old one that was destroyed. I just swapped them out. Pardon my lingo as I dont no much about lever locks but, there are little arms that come off the back of the keyways that manipulate the levers when the key is turned. Well, in the old lock they where made from some sort of pot or cast metal and had broken in a few different places.

I couldnt find anything that looked like it either...some of the welds on it seem pretty crude. Solid though, it must weigh close to 75lbs.

Oh yea, What problem are you guys seeing in the hinge? The hinge operates fine and doesnt really seem to have been tampered with...at least not lately anyways. It is straight and swings open and close very smoothly, though the picture is kinda deceiving, just because of all the layers of paint on the safe/hinge.

I see...........

As already said though, the lock is not very substantial. To be a quality safe, it would need throw bolts locked into place by that lock.

There are very secure safes available (UK) for less than £100 on Ebay so unless a specific collector is after it, I doubt it is worth much more than the lock itself.

Sorry.

The hinge looks screwed on.
Simply unscrewing the hinge could open the safe.
It may have a lip inside to prevent that but, I can't see that in the pictures.

Yes, it has a lip on the inside so it wont pop open if you just unscrew the hinge. But I have to figure out how to get the re-locker to work with the lock. I do agree, just having that lock bolt for security isnt going to do much. I was thinking about extending the bolt on the relocker to go passed the back of the lock, that way if someone tries to punch out the lock the relocker will engage. What do you think?
BTW, I found a home for it. Im giving it to a friend for cost and he is going to build me a new lock stand in exchange.

There is usually a metal plate screwed to the back of the lock with two of the four screws, it has a bend that retains the spring loaded relocker bolt. Simple to make and GOOGLE should find an image.

These drop safes are not meant for any high security, they are a convenience item.

I've not seen one with a surface hinge like this, nor the two plates welded on the exterior of the door.

Cleaned up I would sell it in our shop for perhaps $125.

Thats along the same line as I was thinking. Yea, he doesnt have alot of valuables or money so hes not to worried about high security. Hes just wants something that the kids cant get into...figured this would work.
