96 ranger 10-cut door locks/ 8-cut ignition?

Postby lockjock50 » 20 Nov 2012 21:18

Ive been locksmithing for about 10 years now. I have only recently in the last 2 years began servicing ignitions and this was confusing to me.
I took a job to make a key for a 1996 ford ranger. Autosmart book tells me that it was a split year. Could have been the 95 10-cut model or the 97 8-cut model.
Within 5 minutes i had the door lock read and cut. I sat down in the drivers seat with my 5-3 box of try-out keys only to be confused. I was looking at a standard 8-cutfor ignition.
The customer swore up and down the truck used the same key for both. I was lost as to what to do. He mentioned the key didnt work well in the ignition anyway. So i decided to change the ignition out. My question at this point was do i replace it with a 10-cut or 8-cut? I only had a 8-cut in the van. I then keyed it using cuts 4,5,6, from the 10-cut door key and then 4 #1's to finish it out. The 10-cut key now worked the 8-cut ignition.
So the question is....
Is it normal to replace a 10-cut ignition with an 8-cut? Was the whole steering column replaced at one point? It just seems like they wouldn't interchange.

lock jock, unfortunately discussion of automotive locks is restricted in the open forums so we dont really talk abput that kind of stuff in the searchable part of the forum. I'm sure you can appreciate our desire to keep this kind of knowledge out of the hands of troublemakers. all that being said, you sound like a legit locksmith, often we immediately suspect some wrongdoing in progress. unfortunately, i know nothing about auto stuff so i couldnt help you anyway.
I punched punctuation right in the face!

Well i haven't been granted access to the automotive advanced section. I really didnt know where else to post this. And as for being posted in a searchable part of the forum, i just thought it was less information for "The troublemakers" than bump keys.
Thanks for your comments. If you know of a better place for me to talk about automotive locks let me know please

Yes, don't talk about it until you have access to the Advanced forums..

As for bump keys, they're a fun fad, but still take practice and having the correct blanks. Cars on the other hand, people seem to take very seriously, and even though there may be videos on youtube showing how to open them, it's at the discretion of this forum's owner not to share that information if he doesn't feel like sharing it in the open.

Even though you are only asking about ignition details, and not about which slim jim to use on which linkage for a 200x model car, we have to draw the line somewhere in making sure we dont just have a wide open auto bypass / picking discussion, because that would be irresponsible, so we draw the line at not talking automotive outside the Automotive sub forum. If auto is all you do and all you want to talk about, then you'll have to wait to get into Advanced. Those are the house rules, and putting it somewhere else just to post it is not really cool. If you want to Private Message another locksmith and they are willing to help you, then by all means, feel free.

If you're a lock hound like most of us and enjoy all aspects of locks, picks, auto, and perhaps safes, then stick around and make friends and discuss all there is about locks, and in no time flat you will have enough time here and posts so you can apply to the Advanced info area and then discuss auto locks all you want.

fair enough?

I apologize for being out of line. I just figured an ignition question would be less unauthorized information than bump keys or the post i read about the guy who picked his neighbors lock and left a dump in his house.
its more of a mechanics question

I didn't like that guys post, we are not impressed by stupid tricks people do with their picking knowledge. No need to apologize man, you're getting your feet wet here, it takes time to poke around and learn all the corners of this place. Long before I ever came along they already had an Advanced area for vending locks, safes, and auto locks. Bumping came along and I've been thinking of making it its own sub forum so it isn't interlaced with the other areas. It has it's place but to me its more of a parlor trick than anything close to "picking" a lock (be it raking or single pin picking)

I know your question is more technical as to the 10 vs 8 and doesnt actually talk about picking, so that's why it's not in the Auto area yet, normally we move anything too touchy, but I'm ok with this one being where it is.

Have a good night,
