BEST keyways

Postby wiz329 » 2 Dec 2012 19:47

How many different types of Best keyway blanks are there? I can find PDFs online with most of the types, but I can only find tidbits here and there about the "AG" blank. Do they not sell these, or are they restricted? I can't find those type of blanks anywhere, or even any information on them anywhere.

Those keys are made by generic manufacturers. They usually fit into a number of normal keyways. For example I have an A, D, E, G, cores that are keyed alike and I can open them all with a single FM blank.

On hand I have... DE, FM, JK, and LSX for example.

I think LSX is a totally separate, restricted keyway.

But I have a key that says "AG" on it, and I've heard tidbits about it around the web, but I can't seem to actually find any online? Additionally, I sent an email to CLK asking if they had any and here's what they sent me:

I am sorry but at this time the AG key is restricted.

I wasn't aware of any Best (proper, not subsidiary) keyways that were patented.

@wiz329:

"Restricted" means something totally different from "Patented"...

"Patented" is usually implicitly controlled distribution on a keyway which has a currently valid patent protection on it...

"Restricted" is a keyway which the factory makes but only sells under contractual conditions to authorized users that does not have a patent protection...

I believe that an original Best key marked AG would be a double milled blank designed to pass the A and G keyways. Take a look at the Best price list and you can see that they allow you to order double, triple, quad, or five milled key blanks. I assume there are some rules about what works together and what doesn't. Because these come directly from Best they would be considered restricted by default. http://www.pandc.nc.gov/Stanley%20Security%20Solutions%20STC450B.pdf

Why couldn't another manufacturer make these double milled blanks and sell them?

They do. Quite a few manufacturers make the blanks. They just are not seen or used very often because they are usually quite thin. I can actually bend the FM blanks around my finger.

I've seen FM online before tho -- but not AG. And if FM is not restricted why would AG be?

Thanks, AverageJoe. I have a bunch of Best blanks for my impressioning, but it is nice to see a full listing.

Hey guys

Regarding the BEST keyways, you can look them up here : http://www.jmcsecurity.net/pdf/BestKwy.pdf

and if you are looking into buying bump keys for those BEST locks you can try this website:
http://www.bumpmylock.com/best-be2-bump-key.html

The website is a legitimate business based in Texas, I have purchased some stuff from them and they have high quality stuff.
Most importantly they accept paypal.

I'm still wondering why other manufacturers don't sell double-milled blanks like the one I mentioned above, AG.
