What is the pliers for lockrings called?

Postby Stinger » 9 Dec 2012 13:39

Im not even sure if "lockrings" is the correct term

Hello all

Been inactive on the forum for some time, but recently took picking up again - and wow what a joy!

When repinning my locks I have a special pair of pliers to open the lockrings that hold the cylinder in place. But when the lock is repinned and I want to fasten the ring again - What is the name of that special pliers I need?

I actually found it here in the Multipick catalog page 96 called "Mounting Pliers"' I gues thats what I need right?

http://www.multipick-service.com/htdocs ... atalog.pdf

But what is the correct term for this, and can I get something with the same function cheaper at a local store or online?

I already got the opening pliers from the very same page in the Multipick catalog, and they seems to be a very specific tool. So I wonder if there really is any other way around it - or I should just get the pliers from the catalog.

Also - where can I buy some spare lockrings? Don't see them in the catalog or any other online store, and I just need a few.

Thank you so much.

Is this what you're looking for?

Also if you look at the right hand column on that page it shows several different packages of assorted rings that are available.

Zeepia - Thank you so much for posting the picture.

MBI - The pliers you link to looks like the one I use to open and remove the rings - I need something like to close them tight with. The rings I see on most locks won't have small holes on the end, so I can't use the needle pointed pliers to close them.

What I need is like the blue pliers in the link, just wondering if it had another name and could be bought for less than the $70 at Multipick.

I guess locksmiths must use something like that all the time?

But I can see that I can buy lock rings from your link. Thank you so much.

Living in Western Canada, I don't work on European profile cylinder often so, buying the tool in not warranted for me. I normally open the ring with my "snap ring pliers" then use needle nose pliers to yank it off. After servicing/re-keying is done I re-install the ring with the same needle nose pliers I used to remove it. It has always worked well for me and I never got a call back because a plug pulled out.

If you feel that you need that tool, but don't want to pay that much for it, it should be possible to modify a pair of electrician pliers to do the same job.

for the lockrings , they are only available or included in a kit. again, you may order that alone if you know the part number(certainly for just that brand). but then you are just looking for "few"of this..so i may suggest...try and check your nearby locksmith repair shop, they might have old profiles from their garbage they dont need and willing to give for almost free. i have hundreds of these different lockrings i collected for years..i wish you were just within the neighborhood.

for the c-ring compression plier, if you want to fabricate out of a cheap material, the electric wire splicer
that cost 3$ US dollars, is a suitable material.regards

I believe they're also called "circlip pliers".

Yep, that's them. I also find narrow nose pliers will do it.
