Changing lock cylinder - Elevator

Hi all,

I have an elevator that has got various locks to over-ride lift functions.

The key to override these functions is a 6160 key (Schindler Australia). Unfortunately someone in the building has got their hands on one of these keys and is causing all sorts of grief.

The most recent one being that they got their hands on a fire services key and now can access every level the building

The lift company has quoted me $2000 to change the locks however I am exploring options to have the lock cylinder replaced so that the resident is stopped from doing this and save a few bucks along the way.

I don't claim to be a locksmith but want to better secure the building and was thinking the above would be a good place to start.

You may have already done this, but have a quick check first into the requirements around the fire service keys (i.e., are elevators required to be pinned to a standard key in your area?). I'd just hate to see you save a few bucks by doing it yourself, and then see someone hurt (or you charged) if there ever was a fire and the FD couldn't work the lift. (Standards around keying requirements can even vary from one region of a country to another, though, so you may actually be fine in your area.)

if the locks are installed on schindler lifts, I would be very careful, due to the voltage behind the panel can be 240V even if it is only 12-24V at the contacts of the keyswitch.

i would also be very hesitant to do anything with that elevator that wasnt totally cleared by the proper authorities. If you aare the building owner i can see wanting to save some money. if you re an employee i would strongly recommend calling a locksmith, its not your money and peoples lives could depend on those locks working properly. its not worth getting points for saving lots of money for the company if people are at risk or if the building owners get fined for non compliance of a regulation. just my 2 cents.

BTW, can you post a picture of the actual elevator lock you are dealing with?

you also need to try to figure out how those keys got loose, implementing a key control program would be a good move as well.

And wire the switch so that when anyone uses the fire access key it sets off an alarm. That ought to freak the guy out!

Hi - Sorry to revive a VERY old thread. This is the only place on the internet I can find a trace of this "6160" key. Our building also has this key, and we used to use it daily until COVID and we shutdown. We've now lost the key and trying to find a replacement before paying to have the lock cylinder changed. (Expensive, as you've mentioned).

Been to a few locksmiths but none of them know the "T6160" key (as stamped on our lock).
Does anyone know what series or (as the locksmith asked) the "system" the T6160 belongs to?

It looks like you may be in the Australian state of New South Wales, I have a couple lock friends down there I can ask.

In the mean time could you post a clear photo of the lock's keyhole? I want to see if is double or single sided. (upload photo to imgur.com as Hidden (not as Public for Community) and copy/paste the URL link here)

If I showed you some photos of keys could you identify the key by looking at the shape of it? did it have a little notch cut out of the side? take a look here for examples https://www.elevatorkeys.com/by-schindler

I just have to laugh at the people who post these requests. I deal with operations and maintenance and through my elevator service company can order any of the service keys I require other than the fire service key. The people who are seeking these keys are either users not authorized to engage with the service vendors to obtain the keys they need or are not google-fu enough to locate after market keys like the OP was attempting to deal with an issue caused by someone who obtained a set of keys for that type of elevator.
