I'm going to buy a new lock from CVS

Postby InfinitelyLocked » 26 Dec 2012 12:50

I am brand new to picking and have only picked a few locks in my house and a spare I have. I want to go buy a good practice, easy , beginning lock to practice on.. Recommendations?

For padlocks, Master #3 or #5 laminated locks - the old style with the blue bands, are easy learning locks. For deadbolts, Kwikset locks, but not the SmartKey systems.

Go to Walmart and get a Brinks deadbolt for $12 or Home Depot and get a Defiant deadbolt for around $14-$15.

Happy picking!

I'm new too and figured I'd share this.

If you have a habitat for humanity restore near you, or any recycled building material type place. Go in and ask what they do with the hardware from donated doors, locks from file cabinets, any lock they don't have a key for. They usually just chuck them. I have a restore about 10 miles from me, and once a month I go in and grab a free bucket of random locks.

It's like Easter morning once a month!

Plus all the locks are worn and goobered. They've each developed their own personality, much more interesting than a spanking new some-such virgin.
