Pickset- Sorry for posting this

Postby Klinx104 » 25 Dec 2012 18:38

hey all,
sorry for making this my first post,
i got a pick-set for xmas yesterday,
and have looked on the site it's from, googled,
duckduckgo'd and binged my heart out, but i have
yet to figure out the names of all the picks.
it's a 10 piece set, with at least a half diamond, but aside from that,
i have no idea what they are.

i would really appreciate it if someone could tell me all the picks... their seems to be an awful
lot of hooks...

Thanks in advance,

Klinx

PS. yes i did read viewtopic.php?t=7568
but it didn't really help

Starting at noon and working clockwise:

a special rake made for dimple locks.
an undercut half diamond.
a medium hook
a short hook (with a little notch to help you get a good grip on pins - nice touch)
another hook
half diamond
hook

Lets see how many different names we will all have for the same picks.

No need to apologize. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Welcome to the forum, and you have a nice set to begin with. Now the key will be to get yourself some old locks (not in use), or a practice lock and practice, practice, practice :D

That's a nice explanation given by Romstar, and he gives you good explanations of their function. So let's put that together with the pic of your set. You're right that there are a lot of hooks, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. To begin with you won't be using them all, but they may come in handy if you want to make hobby picking a long-term thing. In fact, just one of the hooks is a good place to start.

At 12 o'clock in your pick is a pick for raking dimple locks.I won't get into method as there's no shortage of that for you to read over.

At 1 o'clock is another rake for pin cylinder locks. Pin cylinders are the type you will meet most often.

At 2, 4 and 11 o'clock are pretty much standard hook that would be a good starting point. Simply, there are very similar in reach and function.

At 5, 8 and 10 o'clock are hooks that will be useful to get around pins into locks with narrow keyways.

At 7 o'clock is a sort of half-diamond that doesn't look that well defined. It would be nicer to have a more distinct diamond on that.

I'd highly recommend studying 'Practical Lock Picking: A Physical Penetration Tester's Training Guide' by Deviant Ollam as a great starting point. It's a great book to get familiar with the glories of hobby picking, tools, methods and great exercises to help you out. I think it was updated late this year, so go for that one rather than the one published a few years back.

And of course, visit the forum often, there's a huge wealth of information here for you, and once you've done a search for a point (as you did), there's a huge wealth of experience here in some real pros to help you.

Happy picking, Klinx and Merry Christmas.

Opps, sorry for cross posting. I was happy rattling my keyboard while you posted. I didn't see yours until I posted. Sorry, dude.

Thanks so much to both of you, you were a great help!
i've started researching for those specific locks, and am
looking into that book.
it's a funny title, since that's for PHYSICAL pentesting, and i also hack,
which is also pentesting, so these two hobbies tie in very well.

i've been trying to pick a lockwood 110/40, but i fear their are security pins,
as i keep getting false set...

i look forward to spending some time here and learning all the tricks,

Klinx

The second edition book is out now and avaliable on Amazon right now for $32.97 http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Lock-Pi ... 1597499897

I pre-ordered it and got it right when it came out. All of the 1st edition book's prices are wacky. I read a few articles that online bookstores base their prices mathematically off of their competitors and there have been cases of books getting into the 10's of thousands for no reason.
