What do you want to know?

Here's a service manual which may help you, check out the 700 cutaway diagram:

i did see that during my searches, i was thinking it was a bit different. I have been working on the assumption that the 600 was more like an SFIC core, being a solid brass snowman looking thing that came out in its entirety. it looks like the 700 has the hardened snowman shaped cover that protects a kik shaped core. I may be totally wrong regarding my assumption, the thing is i can find very little info/diagrams of the 600 series, but lots on the 700 and above. The roto pick is looming cause the guts of this lock are driving me nuts, so im thinking ultimately that ill need to replace the core.

Based on the photos in this ebay auction of an American 600, I believe it to be a sleeve that goes over the bible of the "kik" style cylinder. www.ebay.com/itm/261073709472

Are you having trouble picking it? Try wobbling the wrench from low to medium pressure while picking, that may help over come the strong cam spring.

good luck,

This is a guess because I don't have that model lock in particular, but I do have several that - by the appearance of your posted picture - seem very similar. Some hunting around through documents didn't turn up any info on the lock, likely it's a discontinued model. Does it say "A600" stamped on the body? I've noticed that older American locks seem to include the "A" prefix (at least the older ones in my collection do, so I can only presume that this extends to other models of their locks as well)

If my guess is correct, your lock takes a standard KIK cylinder. The bible cover that retains the KIK cylinder is held in place via a screw beneath the shackle (like most rekeyable padlocks). In theory the parts should be compatible with the more current American KIK compatible (3600/3700/3800) locks.

I recently posted a picture of a Master 6842 I just received; internally, it should be very similar to what you have, so hopefully this picture helps you out.

If you're able to pick it open, then replacing the cylinder should be a cinch, although really the only way to know for sure is to open it up and have a look-see.

thanks for the info guys, i just opened it. still dont know what the guts look like, will have to work on clearing the hex screw of all the rust before i can open it up. will attempt this after work today. i figures out why i couldnt pick it- it took me so much force with a screw driver that i thought something was going to break, the thing was filled with rust, and muck i guess.

Hopefully yo can get it open without too much trouble. When you do get it apart, it would be awesome if you could post some pics!

well, i got it open, not easily though. turns out it was as i imagined it was, a single piece unit- well 2, plug and body/bible all with the figure8 shape all the way down. in the photos 'A' shows a brass pin i had to drive flush to remove the plug, there are 2 at right angles to each other. 'B' shows one of the two stops that prevent the plug from rotating more than 90 deg.
