Iron eagle / 6-lever padlock

Postby franko452000 » 4 Jan 2013 19:01

new p.c. have not set "photo-bucket" yet. i've traced this lock to the 1800s. it was rusted-shut ! any-who i was able to pick it open with my warded-lock picks. i filed a key after the pick i used, but if you have seen these keys they are "two-pronged"... but a single cut key opens this lock. NO big deal , but it was fun too play with.

I found these photos of an Excelsior 6-Lever pancake lock online some time ago. I do not know who took them but they are instructional for seeing what the insides of one of these things looks like.

I noticed that in the second photo one can see that some of the springs are resting against the case while others are pressing against locking bar.

not sure why this simple cut in the blank worked, the tumblers frozen maybe ! it's too old a lock to destroy and find out ! looks good on the the peg-board.

I have seen a number of these things for sale on eBay and noticed that when they have a key it is always symmetrical. That has led me to wonder if the layout of the levers is symmetrical inside the lock or if the symmetry of the key was just to allow the key to be inserted either way. Your asymmetrical key suggests that the latter may be the case.
