Gun storage box recomendation

Postby Daggers » 12 Jan 2013 19:59

My parents are looking for a gun safe/just something secure to hold it in. They don't want anything that has to use a battery or a key (the no key requirement is so if they hear a break in at night they don't have to look for the key). They also want it to be able to be opened in the complete dark and secure enough to resist a kid messing with it. Anyone have something in mind? They were looking at something with a simplex push button lock but I wasn't sure how secure that is. I told them they should just get something with a fingerprint reader that puts the battery externally just in case the battery runs out but they don't like batteries.

I do not like the battery type of locks, whether they are fingerprint or access code. I went through two pistol-size (electronic) boxes before I went to a mechanical lock. I like the type of lock used in the V-Line lock boxes and safes.

They are also used in Fas1 safe boxes.

Both are highly recommended.

I wouldn't recommend any electronics either.
If your parents are looking at one with a Simplex, it is a good choice. The combination can be changed easily and can be made pretty difficult to guess or even perform...They are safe enough to keep kids out of it, they can be operated in total darkness and are fully serviceable.

To me, given your two examples, Simplex wins.

In my opinion (and in certain jurisdictions) often a suitable gun saae will comprise 2 separate locks. A combination and a key. usually one person has the key and a separate person knows the combination. this provides a checks and balances approach to gun safety.

That being said, there are specific requirements as to the material construction of the firearm safe. It is also my opinion that you should lock ammunition separately from the firearm.

As to the lock specifics. I think you'd be better off with a S&G (or equivalent) dial combination lock. They are deliberately built for the application and often work forever with little maintenance.

Yes, Simplex are considered an industry standard for doors, but safes? I doubt they are a suitable product for the application (however I have seen them used).
