Lock Bump research question

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Lock Bump research question

Postby kylek » 9 Feb 2013 17:44

I'm doing some research on lock bumping, and I'm trying to figure out what percentage of locks are SC1 and SC4. I'm having trouble finding a place to see these types of statistics. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to look?

Thanks!

Try your local locksmith. They have the best pulse on what locks are used.

Good luck,

Gordon

You're having trouble because no such statistics exist. It's like asking how many Toyota Camry owners like going to Taco Bell for lunch on Tuesdays. Some for sure, but how many, nobody will ever have a number or percentage on that sort of info.

SC1 5 pin is probably going to be 99% of residential Schlage SC keyway locks in the USA, and SC4 is going to be found in 30% to 50% of business Schlage SC keyway mortise cylinders on aluminum doors. That's from my personal experience, you're mileage will vary state to state, and city to city. Like Gordon said, ask a locksmith in your area, they'll know how often the install 5 pin or 6 pin.

If you are looking for more general statistic you could try and contact the company. They surely know how much they produce and will probably have some insight into what happens to which locks. The question is will they share it:). But if you have all the credentials showing you are doing actual research and assure them you are not after their trade secrets I think they will help you.

If it's a question of trade secret stuff (I don't think so, but people like to think their stuff is more secret than it really is), I don't think they'll tell you much, no matter what credentials you have.

Good luck.

If a SC4 goes in the lock all the way use it to bump even if it is keyed to a SC1. That's all you need to know.

I am a locksmith from west texas and more often than not schlage keyways are only 5 pin. so much so that we usually drop the 6th pin to make the world a nicer place. security pins are usually found in the 2nd or 3rd position. I usually keep a SC4 bump key though because they so work on sc1, dont let anyone tell you different. BUT sc4 can damage the lock if its only a 5 pin cylinder. what happens is bumping a SC4 in a 5 pin plug will bend the tail piece and push it outward. it can also ruin the threads on the back cap. i do not recommend bumping but if you need to just put a sc4 blank in the cylinder first to determine what it is.

We own a Camry and DON"T go to Taco Bell.:) I pretty much concur with your numbers. I would add that I rarely see 6 pin except on SOME commercial grade leversets these days.
