Schlage M-series

Postby vinnie » 12 Feb 2013 20:41

So I just picked up 3 Schlage M-series door locks. One is a lever that says "M-40" on it and the other two are "M-84". Now I can't find anything about these locks anywhere on the internet. As far as I can tell the 'm-series' are magnetic locks, yet these are older completely mechanical key locks (will post pictures in a bit).

Does anybody know anything about this elusive Schlage M-series?? They came out of an office building, the owner switched locks on one floor and was selling em $8 a pop.

AH! Thosssse numbers!...I don't know what they mean...Maybe die numbers?
Nice score! :D Good for you!
It looks like what you've got here are Schlage A-series knob and a D-series lever. If indeed they are, they are Grade 1, very good quality, tough as nails, in an expensive Oil Rubbed Bronze finish. They looks well used and developed a very nice patina, I love that finish it wears very nicely.
$8.00 a pop!!! At our shop, it retails close to $400.00!

Nice! Very nice!

Actually, on second look, I think the knob is a D-series as well, seeing that the rosette threads on...
Worth even more.
$8.00 a pop!

very happy on my find then! if anyone is in the Ottawa area there are 47 more for $8 each. I'd love to pick up more but I'm on a student budget.. maybe I'll scrape together a few bucks a get a couple more.

also I just took one apart and couldn't help but wonder what the spring in the 6th hole is for??

also looks like there could be a hell of a lot of different keys for it. And interesting that the 3rd was completely missing. maybe it was rekeyed at some point and someone forgot to put them back in.

my mistake. that's not what the spring was from. just being a bit clumsy and had it fall out when I wasn't paying attention so I thought that's where it came from.

Nice find!

That plug is a bit abused though, it looks like
someone has filed it too much. But with that price you can't expect it to be in perfect condition.

That smaller spring you mentioned is for the retainer ring. It fits into a hole in the rear of the plug and has a long pin with a tapered end on one or both ends installed after it. The pin is pressed in, and the retainer ring is screwed on. The pin is pressed by that spring, and the tapered end fits into one of the notches on the inner ring of the retainer ring.

Whomever was rekeying those locks didn't have a clue. Probably the maintenance man because the management thought paying a locksmith was too expensive.

I found one of these this weekend for $1 at an old bargain barn :P . My M-series has this cool kind of pedal-like design all around the handles. It's beastly. Someone had drilled out the pinstack. I took it apart to get the pinstack swapped out. I just swapped in a SC-1 keyway and changed the longer rear end piece (not sure what it's called) with the shorter original one. I took it... like ALL the way apart though, and am having trouble getting the rest of the lock put back together, b/c of the spring-loaded center area.
