Help! Im looking for a (multi padlock farm gate) lock system

Postby DavidCoyle » 23 Feb 2013 6:44

Hi, I was wondering if any of you could help me.

Im looking for a type of locking system for a field gate that gives access to my angling association.
(example of the gate)Image I have seen this locking system before.

It would allow access via padlocks and sliding bolt for the anglingclub, the forestry and the water board.

Ive searched everywhere to try and come up with a name for this system but cant find it anywhere. Any info you could give would be very much appreciated

I've never seen a name more specific than a single-leaf swinging gate with a latch?

I'm not sure what country you're in (you left it blank in your profile), but if it doesn't need to be that exact style of latch, any farm supply store should be able to help you with something reasonable. For example, TSC in the States:

Alternately, there are various places that supply security gates that also carry parking-type gates that would work. As an example from the UK:

http://www.herasuk.co.uk/welded-mesh-gates.asp

Not sure if that helps at all? Alternately, any welding shop should be able to quickly fabricate something for you, just based on that picture?

I think I know what you're asking for, this company sells several different models to fit gates with a device that allows 1 to 6 padlocks, and it only requires removing 1 padlock to unlock the gate. I seem to remember a technical name for this, multiple custody or something, maybe someone else will remember.

In the mean time check this out: http://www.sharelox.com/ click the different model numbers at the top of the page and allow time for pics to load.

You may also find this interesting reading: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2 ... _lock.html

And here are some Flickr photos of what you're describing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/4349729207/

As described on the Schneier on Security site, you could also use several lengths of chain and have a padlock every so often, but in practice I have seen users lock out other users by not using the system correctly.

Hope that helps,

I have several gates at work that require access by our crews, city crews, and police. Each has their own padlock.

We use 3 short lengths of chain padlocked together with the three padlocks. We make sure the chains are short enough that you can't accidentally lock it so someone else won't be able to get in.

Squelchtone,
Nice reply, I have been locksmithing over 30 years
and would not have come up with that product as an answer.
Thanks, I will keep that in my back pocket for MY answer to this question.
Sharelox................Nice.

Squelchtone, that is really cool. I had no idea there was such an awesome device around! This may help my father-in-law with one of his gates in Colorado. Thanks for that!

Thanks everyone for the information.

squelchtone bravo thats exactly what we are looking for. The Flickr photos were what ive seen before, Some guy from another club fabricated it himself and I never quite did get my head round what he done so the locks from sharelox will do just fine.

Thanks again guys on behalf of myself and our club youve been a great help.
