Good beginner's locks? (UK)

Postby andypro » 7 Mar 2013 13:47

Hey, I'm very new to lockpicking and am wondering if there are some well-known UK locks that are easy for beginners to start off with? I've had a look round and the majority seem to be US ones (kwikfit etc) that cost a fortune to ship over here.

So far I've managed to find a Master Lock 3, and am looking at locks like http://bit.ly/Xt6SFZ and http://bit.ly/15AgiS9 on eBay, but I'm not 100% sure if these are easy to pick. Honestly I'm feeling a bit lost and could do with some help on figuring out how difficult which locks are to pick.

The sterling is a good choice. No security pins, usually get pretty nice feedback from them. I'd look for a better price though, 7 quid is a bit much for one. That's what you'd pay in the local hardware shop, can get them for 3-4 quid on ebay. Not a lot of difference but when you start buying loads of locks it really adds up.

The drawer lock might be fun. I can't say for that one but the ones made by yale are all standard pins and nice enough to pick besides the small keyway. Grab it and see, why not.

I'd also recommend eurospec (E*S) - but NOT the MP10, laird (LSH), and ERA as good beginner cylinders. ERA euro cylinders are pinned differently though; they have 6 pins and are full of spools so unless you're feeling adventurous stick with their 5 pin rim cylinders.

When you feel like progressing to spools, iseo and zone are generally pretty forgiving. Zone can be either 5 or 6 pin, but it doesn't matter. Pinning is the same in each, all spools apart from pin 1. Iseo are all spools apart from pin 3.

If you're not sure about any other locks in particular, ask away.

These aluminium euros are cheap as chips and good for destroying/picking
