Padlock-with front spinning bit

Postby P[]LYP » 31 Oct 2003 12:51

I have found a padlock in my garage 4 pin tumblar, the front seems to have a kind of facia that dosent do anything apart from annoy me (maybe anti-pick dunno). Basically it has nothing to do with the lock apart from it has space for the key to go in, the problem is when i insert my TW and turn it in any direction the facia just keeps spinning round. If any1 knows how to overcome this or has any tips plz post.

p.s Varjeal u worked out that other lock yet

Hi,

Well it could be a warded lock, or a disk (Abus) type lock or it could be a plate which revolves with the key to prevent drilling the key way. A photo would be useful.

Cheers

no its not a warded lcok i think the key and it has 4 deep notchs in. The fornt bit i dont think its for drill prevention because its about .1mm thick (very flimsy). I think im going to fill the front spinny thing off becuse it dosent do anything and have a look

The email with the key you sent me finally showed up. I'd like to see pics of the lock, but from the looks of the key this doesn't seem to be a very secure lock. In fact, I would guess that a simple gear-type device moves the latching mechanism back and forth, so a screwdriver of an appropriate site would probably do just as well.

Without seeing the lock, though, this is just a guess.

Yea, the way you describe the key and the lock it sounds like Varajeal says. I actually found a realllllly old padlock around one of my friends houses with the key in it. They key looked sorta like a normal pin tumbler key but the face of the lock rotated like a warded lock. Also, the "pins" in that lock were frozen in place which leads me to believe they are some sort of wards. It probably wasnt a warded lock persay but it seemed to work onthe same principal. My warded keys opened the lock like I open a normal warded padlock. I suspect the lock you are refering to is similar. If you have warded picks, give it a shot, if not, break out the screw drivers.

If it has more than one moving part iniside then it is probably a simply lever lock.

thx varjeal. anyway i managed to pull the front facia of the lock, it was exactly that nothing more but a filmsy facia. The lock inside is even more strange there is no where you can put tension on is because the actual keyway is circular. The bits that open the lock are strange becuse one sits inside a semi circle attached to the left side. i.e two semi-cirlces with space in middle and becasue i can see waht the key does it pushes that pin or device up The smei-circles obsure my vison so i cant actually properly see the pin/device inside but what i did notice was that the bit on the key is cut into a "m" snape so the middle stalk is able to get between the semi-circles try to visualize this. I can pick this bit. The next one is a simlar type of pin but dosent have the casing It is a shallow square cut. And the last one has two rectangular shaped bits next to each other kind of like the semi circles but one comes from right and left so that they overap each other and the end of both of these slants down at a 45 angle. On the key there is only half a "m". This is the pin i cant seem to pick. I only have my safety pin (finger pick) so it keeps getting bent im waiting for my southord set i ordered to get round this. A few occasions i was picking the lock and i realeased it was open but i wasnt sure if i did it with the key and didnt relase. Pretty long post if any1 has seen this type of lock be4 plz post thx simon
