disassembling Locks

i know there are countless people on this site who know how to do this, and yes, i have tried searching for this but have found nothing, the search feature on this site isn't great.

could anyone here give me an explanation of how to take apart a padlock or at least give me a link to somewhere that already has an explanation.

i have read that it is best to take out the pins on locks when starting out with lockpicking. e.g. starting out with only one pin.

i don't have a spare dead-bolt lying around( i have read that you should take these apart) but i have a cheap, plate style padlock here and i was wondering whether i could use this instead.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have a padlock that i think is a masterlock but i'm not sure all it has written on it is 40mm and made in china


and i don't know how to get it open


i found 2 flathead sized indents on the sides that look like i pry it open but it wont pry open

with the master lock fake - all masters are made in Milwaukee as far as i know

anyway if its laminated steel you have to file the studs on the bottom of the padlock off then pry the plates off.

when you use the search feature, just keep looking, you'll find what you want most of the time. Just take a little time and maybe you can learn a little more.

Its not crap. You just need to search for the correct words and phrasing.
Or, you could take the old approach of just reading the entire forum, takes a little while, but you will be better off for it.

I am not a fan of the search feature either. Google to the rescue...
You can use google to search any site:

Some solid brass padlocks can like the 140 and 150. There are also padlocks that are designed to be rekeyed but standard Masterlocks like #3's and such cannot.

Depends, if its a removable core then theres no problems, but if its solid brass and you use the blow torch method, you're going to need new springs, its also fun trying to get the retaining pins back in.

With a little determination, you can rekey pretty much any padlock, provided you don't destroy the components or the lock body in the dismantling process. Brass padlocks with pins covering the stacks are dismantled by drilling the pins, then removing with an easy-out. Brass padlocks with a cover-plate can be dismantled via the steam method....just be sure to have spare springs. Laminated padlocks can be dismantled by grinding off the rivet heads and removing the bottom plate covering the plug/cyl.

I've done a tutorial on the brass locks with pins, & the layered locks. I think Skold or Hojo, or some other Aussie Bum , did a tutorial on the brass locks with the cover plate.....Seek and ye shall find!
