a new lock to pick

Postby Muskedunder » 18 Mar 2013 19:24

I just bought this door cylinder, is it called a deadbolt? Its a cheap no name 7pin lock that i bought for newb practice...
so i thought i would open it to get some practice at that aswell, so i did, and the thing is full of security pins. wasn't hoping for that . i think a 7pin with 6 security pins is a bit out of my league atm. Those spools sure look funky! But i guess i could remove some of them...
anyway.. i took some pictures. i guess you guys always wanna see a gutted lock

Thanks for the pics! It sure is a cool lock!

Yeah it's a bit advanced, but you're right, change the pins and work your way up from there. Never seen those spools tough!
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

Looks an assa oval cylinder reproduction. It's definitely a cool lock and will keep you busy for a long time. Unfortunately the first pin is very tall, and may be very difficult for a beginner to move the pick in the lock with such a tall first pin. I suggest you to repin it with just the second and third pins to learn the feel. Once you're confident you can try to add the first one and see if you manage to pick it with three pins...

The pins are assa style double spool drivers. Very difficult ones. Dunno if you've been lucky or not, it's an advanced lock, not the best choice to start with.

Cheers :)

Most 7 pin locks are going to be a challenge, unless perhaps they have no security pins. However as far as a know this is not usually the case.

If you are new to picking start with cheap 5 pin an lower locks.

Those pins are quite interesting. Maybe someday I will come across them when my budget increases

Be especially wary with pin 2 and 4 those are evil creatures. I've never been able to pick the 7 pin assa.
If it's too hard you could move the first pin to the back. Since it's so high it will restrict your movement considerably as long as it's at the front.
To infinity... and beyond!

I think I might have seen those spools with one of bills locks before but I am not sure. Nice breakdown mate!
