Look what I found inside a knob today

I figure the last guy didn't know what a floating cap was, but to leave the remnants of your mistake behind to rattle in the customer's knob? Crazy. He also must not have had any pins over .240, because anything larger than that had a master chip in it, unless they really intended to master key the garage door for some reason.

Just a guess at this point ... somebody bumped the thing and it "exploded" - I have had Schlage F line come apart trying to pick one in the past. That sliding cap isn't all that well staked on. One techinque is to actually force the cap off, push the pins out then reset the lock when you get the knob off.

2 - MY further guess is they didn't have a spare cap / "T" pins, or the special springs to reassemble the thing, and just tossed in another cylinder. WHY they didn't "shake out" the parts is anyone's guess.

3- You should carry a bag of the slidering caps, "T" pins, and special springs in your service vehicle. Nothing like having the right parts to do the right job.

4- Using the A-1 tool will eliminate this problem completely.

Or it could be that it "exploded" without even being bumped; this happened at one of my properties where the cap came off through use, inside the lock. Had to drive aaaaall the way down there at night to let the guests in :/
