Euro Cylinder Assembly Clip usage (also Papaiz lock)

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Euro Cylinder Assembly Clip usage (also Papaiz lock)

Clip for holding driver pins in euro cylinders

Have seen a number of questions over time about how to assemble a euro profile cylinder, mostly with how to keep the driver pins in place while inserting or removing the plug. This is based on what Femurat has said before.

Wanted to take apart a Papaiz lock recently. I was having a devil of a time reading impressioning marks, and decided to disassemble the lock and make a key that way. While this is not precisely a euro profile, the clip works just the same.

Will show the lock detail first. (Only 3 pictures. Deal with it!)
The lock - Papaiz 5 pin
Image
Field stripped. Yes - the key blank is filed on both sides and the bottom so that it fits the lock.
Image
The Pins - the very rounded ends of the key pins explain the difficulty in impressioning.
Image
The clip - made from windshield wiper insert, filed down to fit in the bottom of the keyway. I find the bend at the bottom to be important for keeping a snug hold on the lock cylinder.
Image
Pick the lock, and turn the keyway 180°.
Insert the clip as shown. I use a diamond rake to press down the driver pins so the clip can slide into the lock.

The clip fully installed:

Slide out the plug!

Note how the clip stays in place on the lock cylinder. It sticks out a little bit in this picture because I made it for a 6 pin lock, and this is a 5 pin. Could not remove the cam at the back of the plug with the clip fully inserted.
Image
Here you can see the clip holding the driver pins in place.
Image
To reassemble the lock, place the springs and driver pins into the lock body, and put the clip in, using a diamond rake or hook pick to press the drivers down for the clip to fit over them. Then scroll up to reverse the process.

Hope these pictures help those who have been wondering.

I'm using pretty much the same clip. Can be dangerous if it slips off the bottom... :D
(Euro cylinders are even smaller here than the lock you are using)
To avoid this, I always fix it with duct tape or some hot glue to the bottom.

The pictures are zoomed in for detail. Most euro profiles I see are about 33mm total from top to bottom. This Papaiz is only 27mm tall.

But you are correct, it would be safest to tape it in place. Good advice.

I meant that there's a greater chance to slide off than on the Papaiz.
But that should not be the topic here. This method works well and thanks for your pictures.

Hi Gordon. Exellent topic, and very useful tool.

Could you make a photo of the assembly clip right next to a scale so that we can see it's exact dimensions?
How thick did you make the part of clip which goes into the lock? The factory made ones are really thin, but I guess the winshield wiper is just not strong enough to be grinded that thin.

I use this abus tool to reassemble locks. It's really neat for euro profiles, very stable. It also doubles as a cylinder holder since it will hold it in a stable upright position.
if you have or someone you knows has a CNC mill you should definitely get one done.

That looks like a great tool. Should not be difficult to make, either. Thanks for sharing, ARF-GEF!

Great thread Gordon! I was going to post a picture of my abus tool but ARF-GEF beat me to it.
I prefer the abus tool but before getting it I've always used the clip you showed here.
There's another tool that can be made with a paperclip for this purpose if you're in a pinch.

Cheers :)

Yeah, the abus tool is pretty nice an comfy. It's new to me too.
I've also seen a blue plastic tool a few time,s but no idea where it comes from.

Femurat: did you ever break the fine metal wire on the abus tool?
If yes, did you manage to make a new one "at home"?

Fortunately my tool wire is still intact. It shouldn't be difficult to make one, but I try to use it carefully to avoid breaking it.

Cheers :)
