Bought one of those tactical brass magnets. Great for when you drop a pin and can't find it. The best thing about the one I got is the sensitivity dial. I can adjust it so that it only picks up certain sizes of pins. Ever drop your pinning kit? Makes sorting it back into the trays a dream!
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Is it possible the OP saw a demonstration of impressioning and misinterpreted it?

In all honesty, it is possible to create what you are talking about. Take a basic key shape, hollow out centre and fill with five to eight ridges supported on springs. Button could attach to a wire that pulls the springs down, thus lowering the key inserts. Then release after setting it in lock. Although the grooves on the side would be a problem, make it for a specific model. On top of that, the correct tension would need to be applied to each spring. If you have enough patience, go make one. You'll make rakes of money if you get it right.
In the meantime, stick to looking out for some of the Hummingbird Nectar and trying to get a job as an Analyst in the FBI for the QTactical gear... Hummingbird Nectar.

Hello Appleboarder,
The preferred way to make the type of pick you have referred to is with stainless tubing and hydraulics instead of springs. This way with the valves on the head of the key you can adjust the probe both out and in. The more expensive version uses a pressure configulator to pulse each probe. This turns the pick into a much more effective electronic pick gun.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

The other day on service call I had someone ask me to make them a key. The exact method he described to me was a paste that you inject into the ignition and when it dries you have a working key. Sorta like a loose JB weld kind of paste I guess. Is this the same stuff you guys are talking about?

I was talking to a guy the other day. He did not know what I do or who I was, but we were talking about locks and keys for some reason. Turns out (according to him at least) that he used to work with the FBI and would have to "gain access" to homes, businesses and even some vehicles to help them gather information for a case. He explained in great detail using such a goo as mentioned above that he could squirt into a lock, let it set up for a couple of minutes and it formed a working key that they would later come back and use. He also explained how they made impressions of keys lifted from the pockets of people they were investigating by pressing them into a bar of soap and them using molten lead to create a key from the impression in the bar of soap. He also had a remote control that he could use to bypass card readers and keypads simply by pointing it at the keypad or card reader and pressing the button. Man, those guys have all the cool toys.

Sounds like a good description... and I guess he has watched far too many movies and tv shows where people gain entry via various fanciful methods (such as the goo, I mean really, for that to work the lock would have to have its pins already at shear and then somehow not have the goo go into the chambers or other ridges or holes within the inside of the keyway that would prevent removal.) He likely claims to pick locks with a single pick and no TW too in under 5 seconds, and locks of the ilk of oh say ASSA twins or such heh...

I cant imagine that the FBI are better pickers than the members on this forum. This is out passion, They have a job to do. Besides.... Wouldnt goo also leave a lot of forensic evidence?

I could see the goo only working if you picked the lock first, then squirted the goo in. Once it sets, rotate the goo key to the 12 o'clock position to pull it out.
