Okay guys theres this door
Image

And its created a problem for me. The padlock is easy enough to deal with through force(though I am going to try to pick it now). But the metal bar on the left is very confusing to me.

That is what it looks like up close, and this is what it looks like from the bottom:

And here it is from the top:

I realize that this isn't a lock persay, and that it is kind of rude to post a question what on my second post on these forums, but that bar has really been bothering me.

I know people still need to get through the door, so it can't have sealed it, and it wasn't there before. But what it is, or what it is intended to do, or any possible way of bypassing it just elludes me completly. Thanks for any help.

Oh yeah, also if this is the wrong place to post this, i'm sorry and i'll delete it immediately.

Hey,

James Reaves is in charge of replacing / repairing locks at Rutgers, you can reach him at extension 5731. He should be able to help you out.

The cover is probably to keep you from messing with the hinges. They probably though they needed it since they've had to replace the hasp on the slider lock at least three times. What is that- the door to the steam tunnels?

Good grief...

That's not a cover, thats a part of the hinge. What you're taking pictures of is called "continuous hinge" and it's designed for two primary reasons:

1. To keep people from tampering with it.
2. To better balance heavy doors. (not necessary in this case as it appears to be a hollow-metal door, could be wrong)
3. To allow the door to open as wide as possible.

This, of course, leads me to the usual basic questions:

1. Why do you want to bypass it?
2. Do you have permission to?
3. What exactly is this door protecting and why is there a bolt on what appears to be the "outside" of the door?

P.S. Looks to me this padlock thing has been tried at least a couple times before.

The door is locked for a reason. Could be asbestos in there. I wouldn't mess with it.

Both of those locks look like BEST SFIC's to me. Considering the doors such a setup is typically found on I think we'de all love to hear a story. Anyway if you want to pick them you'll need a SFIC tension tool.

You don't necessarily need any special tools for sfi c, though they can help.
I've had good luck with raking and light tension. I bought a set of masterkeyed cores from ebay to play with and with those I've found that a sawtooth rake will usually get the control shear line and the wave rake gets the operating line. I assume your mileage will vary unless your core is keyed like mine. Also it's probably easier to hit the control line on a new core (less crud gluing it in place). I made an ic tension tool from the dimensions on this site and it works reasonably well. If you search for 'sfic' and the model number of that american padlock you should get some helpful advice.

Upon rereading, my last post looks a bit harsh- I certainly didn't mean to discourage any students from exploring. Last time I was at MIT, Jack gave me a nice tour (Hi, Jack!). Just be aware that it looks a bit shifty. I'm sure that there's a perfectly good explanation and I'm looking forward to being put in my place for my scurrilous assumptions.

And yeah- a respirator's probably not a bad idea if they're anything like the mech rooms where I went. Also a hard hat- it's hard to explain pipe shaped burn marks on your forehead.

For crying out loud.

If it isn't your lock, and you don't have permission to open it. DON'T TOUCH IT!
