If you are new to picking, BEST 7 pin locks are the last thing you want to start learning on. It is a very well made lock, unlike the garbage on most people's front doors (ie. Kwikset, residential Schlage from Home Depot (commerical Schlage from a local locksmith is actually well made), Weiser, Dexter, Defiant, Brinks)

The best way depends on your end goal.. are you just trying to open them so you can get them keyed up? If so, just go to a locksmith and have them do it for you, its worth the $25-$75 you'll pay for the service and all the keys you need.

If you like picking for fun and want to learn, I'd recommend something like a Brinks deadbolt from Walmart for $12, or a Master No3. laminated padlock (with the blue plastic bumper) from Target or Home Depot.

Also, what were you trying to pick the BEST with? a real pick set? a paperclip? And when you say, you bumped one.. as in you have a BEST bump key that you made from an existing key or blank key or bought online or did you use some other method of bumping or rapping?

Thanks for any details you can give that can help us give you a better answer,

When I say I’m new. I’ve been working on my skills for about a year now. I wanted a hobby so I started learning and fell in love with lock picking. All the basic locks I can pick. I have a set of basic picks. I also have a verity of bump keys, shims, and a lock picking gun. I own all the locks I work with and have keys for all of them as well. Most of the time I find it easiest to pick the lock rather than using the gun. Plus I hear the guns are bad for the locks. So far the best lock is the only one I can’t pick. I’ve bumped it once out of 90 trys and the gun doesn’t work. I would try shims but I can’t even open a master lock no. 3 with shims. I don’t like being beat and so far best has me beat. I will upload some pics of the lock and key tomorrow. It uses an L key. Any tips on better picking for it would be nice. I have read about a sfic toque tool and I plan to buy one to see if that helps any. Thanks

@kragory:

I would say your 1 in 90 success in not being able to bump open what sounds like standard BEST SFIC cores is because you have a crapola bump key...

There is a great difference in being able to pick a 4 pin Master padlock and being able to pick a 7 pin SFIC core which is machined to many multitudes greater precision tolerances...

Obtaining the Peterson type SFIC torque tool will not improve your odds at opening the lock at all by picking it if you have not been able to pick it as yet... That tool will allow you to focus successful picking attempts at operating the control lug rather than the operating key shear line at the plug once you are able to pick SFIC cores...

Best locks are difficult for many reasons but one is that they have two shear lines, one normal one and one for the removal of the upper section. As a beginning technique, (for easy keyways only) a Southord L rake combined with very light tension will work if you are persistent. The light tension helps restrict the pin setting to the inner shear line only. Use a combined rocking and raking movement and you will get it eventually. If the keyway is one of those hard to get at types, raking won't work because the pick will over-lift some pins as soon as you insert it. The tight keyways are a serious challenge and must be single pin picked.
