help with Brinks lock

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

help with Brinks lock

Postby glens_1999 » 25 Apr 2013 19:01

I purchased a bunch of practice padlocks on ebay. i have picked most of them already, except for a Brinks R70 secure padlock (the type they recommend for storage units). I have not been able to pick this yet. It seems to have a fairly heavy spring tension on the plug that has to be overcome to set the pins.

Any advice out there? Am I on the right track? Is there some type of side bar mechanism like on the Medecos?

Thanks
Glen (NB)

Everyone who eats potatoes eventually dies. Therefore potatoes are poisonous.

These guys cad be a bit of a challenge. I own one and can single pin pick it but it does sometimes take a while.

There is nothing like a side bar and I am not sure it they have security pins or not. I have never experienced and obvious false set with it so I am assumeing their are no spools.

I think one thing that makes it hard to pick is the tension issue. Light tension does not work with mine. With light tension no pins set. So you have to use more than usual. The problem is getting it just right and not going overboard with the tension.

I do however know a secret to open these guys really fast. The king and queen picks! My king pick gets it open in seconds!

Thanks. I don't have a king and queen pick yet. Guess I'll have to make some.

You don't need special picks to open these, you need practice and an understanding of spool pins.

Pick the R70 using a hook, or half diamond, or an S or L rake, and wobble your tension from medium to heavy to over come the gear drive on that padlock.

If you're just starting out in picking, pick something easier than the Brinks R70. Or learn spool pins on something like a Master 140 or Abus 55/50

I just bought a master 140 the other day. Didn't know it had any spools in it. Was wondering why it was harder to pick than expected!

Here are some pics of the lock. Is this a std pin tumbler lock? Does it have any security pins? This is the only lock I have that I haven't picked.

I've heard they may have severe cut transitions, like a 9 to a 1 cut. Is that correct?

Does it help to use a tension wrench at the top of the keyway?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks
Glen

I'll have to read up on how to post pictures.
