Whats better street sweeper bristles or wiper inserts

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

You don't seem to be understanding me, my contrary friend. :P

I don't use 16 inch picks, yanno? What we are saying is that you get more usable material in better condition from wiper inserts. Get it? You just get more & better quality most of the time. From your responses I feel like your actual question was:

"What's better? Street Sweeper Bristles or Wiper Inserts? Also - I don't actually care what you tell me, I'll tell you it's Street Sweeper Bristles, no matter what you say." hehe

Yup... Those gutter wheel brushes start out about 12" long on sweepers... We replaced the ones we used at 1/4 remaining material or 4" to prevent over extension of the hydraulics which raise and lower the rotating head which drives the brush... Longer brushes means you have a little bit more fudge factor when you are steering up against curbing -- the shorter the brushes get the more closely you have to pay attention to where the curb is...

A bus wiper insert has to be what 2.5' or 3' long each...

So obtaining a used transit bus wiper insert is worth two or three lucky finds of long street sweeper bristles or six of the more typical shorter street sweeper bristles...

Your answere is BOTH.

Each has a different thickness and metal structure for diffrent jobs for diffrent locks for diffrent tools. You'll find the more you know about this field, the less you should limit yourself to which is better.

Its like asking which golf club is the best? There all the best in the right location when needed.

I think he meant more along the lines of there's a perfect tool for each application so not limiting yourself to one thing is best.

Like would you use a butter knife to cut a steak or a steak knife to peel an apple etc.

PS how are the picks working out?

i think it's good to have good practice with spp and raking. they both have their advantages. i always practice all methods on each lock i have and pay attention to what works best on each.

Unless the street sweeper bristles were heated red hot (critical temperature) the temper would not likely be changed. There might be some alteration in properties from metal fatigue but one must assume that they are comprised of a durable steel and heat treated with a view to maintaining their efficiency through their working life. I have emailed a couple of companies requesting that their tech guys let me know what steel they use and if anyone replies it would enable a good description of the properties. Let's see what happens.

I received one wiper which had poor non-spring metal inserts in it. Street bristles have to be always the real deal...
If I had bought that wiper I would´ve been very unhappy!

personally I like wiper blade TWs and sweeper bristle picks... but then again, I have a brush, I dont find crap bristles off the street I actually remove them from the brush...

(I am aware that the previous comments are from 2 years ago) just to clear up the length issue... bristles new off the brush are 1ft long bent around a bar in the brush, so removing them without cutting them gets you a lil over 2feet... which is longer than many wiper inserts (not all tho)

I couldnt say either was better I just feel sweeper bristles have more strength... altho they are more prone to snap where wiper inserts will bend before they snap.

I have found that some wiper inserts work better than others, my dad is a mechanic so I am always getting different types of inserts. A lot of them are just to soft to makes picks so I use them for tension wrenches, however I have gotten inserts that are great for making picks because they are stronger steel. I have only ever found a few bristles and the ones I found seemed to not be good for picks because they bent to easy, maybe I just found bad bristles. Overall I would rather make picks out of wiper inserts.

ultimately I think its about access... EVERYONE has access to wiper inserts (even if its just taking em off your car when its time for new ones) but whiper inserts are a lil harder to come by... and finding broken ones on the road is rarely good, because they are already weak and used up (from being on the machine) few people have access to bristles like I do... they both work and thats what its all about ;)

At the moment, I find it harder to come across Wiper blade inserts, but I vastly prefer them. In my area, when I do find street sweeper bristles, they're usually mangled quite badly, but that's the roughness of the US north east I guess... Does anyone know a good way to get rid of all the road salt residue, or should I just keep rubbing?
If it works, it ain't wrong! -GWiens2001
