Another "What padlock to use" question

Postby fgarci03 » 20 May 2013 6:22

Hey guys!

This has popped a lot, and I've been looking for every post on the subject, but I have some specific needs on this one.
On my company, we use a padlock to secure a container where we throw defective material. Being a sportstore, you can imagine what sort of stuff we put in there (bikes, tents, etc). Anyway, this stuff is to be taken by a private company where they do god-knows-what to it.. Don't really care.

The problem is that many people go and steal that stuff during the night. And break the padlock everytime. My boss asked me to check what would be a good padlock to secure it.
I'm not woried about picking. It's not used here as a form of entry, and a good padlock will always be at least a little difficult to pick anyway.

I haven't fully understand how they destroy the padlock. What I've been told is tha they hammer it (with a screwdriver?) and the shackle opens. The lock is destroyed with it. I mean, they don't exactly cut it, more like pry-bar or hammer it. Cutting is a possibility too, and I'd like that covered.

So basically I want a padlock that can resist the elements and violent brute-force attacks. And when I say violent, it's VIOLENT and continued (even that is an understatement)
The big problem is that my store is located on an industrial sight, and at night people have lots of time to be around the lock, so it really needs to be resistant.

I could count with 3 burglars a week, untill they realize they can't break the lock. What would take 3 or 4 weeks, given their thick heads.

If you know by heart where they can be bought would be nice too, but that's something I can find for myself. I'd really like to hear the options available, and their pros-and-cons (and if you know by heart, prices), so I can show my boss for him to chose.
This has been becoming a bigger problem, as the store is constantly spending money on a new padlock just to have it broken again.
(Not sure about wich one, but probably a heavy duty Master or similar).

What do you guys think?
Thanks!

P.S. - It can be keyed or Combo
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

@fgarci03:

When you say "container" do you mean a Conex Box or are you referring to something else ?

Anyway, I've looked at this, but I have no idea of how much it costs, and if there's something better:

Look into Abloy PL362 with Protec core for $265 https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Protec2 ... dlock.html
Abloy makes hasps as well, you can find them on the internet.

The S&G 951 needs a special hasp called a NAPEC hasp, which you may be able to buy from Security Snobs when you buy your 951. Can you weld a hasp to your container or is it a rental container with holes pre made for smaller padlock shackles?

Heres' the 951, it is $1400 https://securitysnobs.com/Sargent-amp-G ... dlock.html

Put up a sign that Remote CCTV is in Use 24/7 bad guys wont be able to tell if it really is or not, and introducing doubt it a great way to mess with them. and put up a motion sensor light on the store that lights up the container at night time.

If you post an actual photo of the container and maybe a ruler next to the padlock that is on it, we can give better advice. Do they use a chain and padlock now or just a padlock where the shackle goes into a hole in the cover?

Oh and I'll take a picture of the container when I go to work again. Its locked on the container and not on a chain. I think that padlock I gave you the link fits in there, I'll have to check to be sure.

If it does not fit, this is the hasp normally used on a "hidden shackle" puck lock http://www.allpadlocks.com/ez-catalog/X380790/92

Here are more examples, they fill fit the smalled shrouded PL341 or the puck style lock you linked: http://www.abloyusa.com/shut-outhasps.htm

Same ABLOY P362 with Protec 2 core recommended by Squelchtone. Found a new one on eBay, out of Australia. Half the price, plus $40 shipping.

P.S. If I had not already overspent my lock budget for the month, and have next month's lock budget committed, would buy this lock myself!

Ah, a dumpster...

Unfortunately you will not be able to successfully secure a receptacle for "trash" or "recycling"...

If the trash pickers are causing some sort of financial loss to the store (other than the nuisance of having to replace the vandalized lock) then an alternative method of storing and transferring the "recyclables" to the private company that does god-knows-what to it will have to be selected to resolve the problem...

This could range from keeping the items in a bin located inside the stock room of the store and making appointments during business hours to transfer the items or obtaining a Conex Box (a.k.a. cargo container) to locate these items outside...

My personal opinion is that using an expensive high security lock on a dumpster is a foolish endeavor...

Ahh, that shackle doesn't fit. I'll have to get a picture to show what i mean.. but I think the lock itself fits...

But supposing both of them fit, would the cheaper one be enough for continuated, low tech, violent attacks?

Or should I go for the shrouded abloy?
I mean, price IS important, but better to buy the more expensive one, than to have the cheaper one broken.. again! Lol

By the way - check that this lock (ABLOY P362) will fit in the hasp!!! Was just reading the specifications, and the shackle is 15,00 mm! That is larger than even the S&G Environmental padlock.

That's a great price for it, thanks Gordon!

Personally, I think that too. I would handle the whole situation a totally different way. But oh well, it's their call...

15mm? WOW
I'll have to check that! I'm not sure if the hole is wide enough! (Get your mind out of the gutter Gordon!)

If you are having this serious of a problem with scavenging now, putting a super duper high security lock on your recyclables dumpster is going to be like lighting up a Bat Signal to all the others who haven't bothered taking a look at what is inside so far...

Using a tough lock that is resistant to cutting is of no use if the container it is holding closed is so easily cut with man-portable battery-powered tools when such an action will so clearly be the next foreseeable step of escalation when the large flashy lock appears...
