a BIG problem

Postby Cman22 » 13 Oct 2004 15:11

I have been experiencing problems while picking my 5 pinned schlage. I can pick it easily when i set the pins in the wrong order but when i hit the binding pin up first all the other pins lock up. Just to make sure, the binding pin is the harder pin, right? Back to the point, I don't want to bend my picks so i push up to a certain fairly hard pressure then give up. I think my tensions good, but i'm not sure. Did i misset a pin that i thought was binding, is the binding pin always the stiffest? Any tips on what may be wrong?

Thanks,

A bound pin simply means the torque required for the other pins is more then what is required for it. These pins must be picked first usually (I know I don't though) because when you apply less torque later on to pick this bound pin the other picked pins will fall out due to their requiring more torque to hold up into the shear line.

The binding pin is just one that is stiff due to the torque being too great. Loosen up torque to pick a bound pin.

Hope this helps.

The binding order of the pins, is greatly influenced by the imaginary line of the chamber bores. The pin that binds 1st is furthest away from the imaginary center line of the bores in the direction you are turning the plug. There are other factors to consider such as work pin etc, but this is a good way to think of it.
If you are having to lift so hard you are bending you pick, your tension is too heavy. Go light find the pin that binds first, start lifting, and with any luck your fingers will tell your brain when they feel the pin set .
