old corbin brass padlock

I got this old padlock without a key. It was a bit stiff, the feedback was strange and inconsistent. I tried to pick it with no success... I was going to oil it a little but then decided to impression a key before adding anything in the keyway. The marks were barely visible, and I had to wiggle a lot before getting one. The plug was a bit loose and I guess the 5 pins are very worn out and gunky.
I had to roll some 320 grit sandpaper around the file to get a finish smooth enough to allow me to see the marks. So every time I saw a mark I filed it away and then finished the surface with sandpaper. A pita but it was the only way for me to get a working key.
Now I can copy the shark-bitted key to a new blank, and then spray some oil in that poor old padlock and pick it...

Cheers :)

Indeed nice job Femurat!

I was wondering for a while: There is an Italian lockmaker called Corbin. Is it related to Corbin-Russwind from the US?

thanks for the compliments :)

Yes Corbin is an Italian company. Now is part of the assa abloy group. It's not corbin-russwind.

Cheers :)

it isn't Corbin-Russwin or Russwin-Corbin (yes both existed at one point or another) these days, but that is the old Corbin logo that you can still find all over the USA ;-)

I wonder if anyone knows the history of how they became popular in Italy.

(LOL I just realised, that I may have already asked the exact same question from you Femurat :D)

but that is the old Corbin logo that you can still find all over the USA ;-)

That what kept confusing me! People kept telling me that's different, but the name was the same, the logo was the same.
Then I've heard they were made in Italy so I was confused.

Interesting to know.
The fun part is, (correct me if I'm wrong femurat or anyone) the Corbin locks from Italy are different from the American Corbin-Russwins.
(not just different profile, but different types too)
But with assa abloy owning everything these what product belongs to whom became so murky. For example Protec 2 is sold in Germany as a product of IKON, mul-t-lock mt5 is also sold under the IKON name...

Anyway, my experience is that sadly the "local" corbins are not as well made as the Corbin Russwins I got from the USA.
Admittedly not an in depth study, just my personal experience :)
Any experience with you guys? :)

Man I wish the link to the company's history on lockwiki still worked. Not it redirects to the new website of assa abloy where there's nothing to be found...
Time to google :)

Have you ever used the Internet Archive Wayback Machine? It takes snap shots of websites over the years, it's a nice way of finding pages that have since been taken down.

Interesting reading, thanks. I stand corrected about corbin being Italian.

Cheers :)
