Medeco Question About Pins and Cylinder

Postby semolian » 7 Jun 2013 19:41

Hello everyone!
I'm new to the board.
I've been trolling around here for a few weeks, this board is very informative! Thank you all for all the hard work you do for the site.

I have a question to all the guru here.
Here are the Photos to help me present my query:

So, the question is... Will the pins/key setup fit into the core in the padlock?
The only other info is that the key/pins setup in the pic are Biaxial G-3, not sure what kind of key is currently in use with the lock. I'm hoping the photos are good enough for the experts to see if they are all compatible, before i make the purchase of the pin/keys shown.

I own the lock but have not purchased the pin/key setup yet.

Why bother, you might ask... well i have a surgery coming up soon that will lay me up for a while, leaving me with time to revisit an old hobby.

Please Advise...

Semolian.

No, the biaxial keys and the cylinder in the presently in the padlock do not have the same keyway...

Those biaxial keys could work if you obtained a replacement cylinder for the padlock in the correct keyway...

Evan,

Thank you very much for your SWIFT response to the question.

I'll just keep it as is, it's too nice to go messin around with anyway.

Peace!

Not only that, the pins included with the 2 keys on ebay do not work in a 1970-1985 Medeco Original. The rotation stop tabs are 90 degrees out of synch.

OP: What are you trying to accomplish? get more keys made for that padlock? go to any Medeco locksmith with the padlock and keys in hand and ask for more keys, it is the 00 AIR keyway and can be copied by any Medeco reseller locksmith.

you can get those AIR keyway 6 pin blanks on ebay, generic or real Medeco http://www.ebay.com/itm/Locksmith-Medec ... 3a6eb6b2db

Then you can use a key machine to duplicate the key cuts, and use a hand file to cut the angles onto the duplicated keys. Or a locksmith with a Medeco machine can cut them for you and they already have blanks so you dont have to buy the ones on ebay.

If you want them to repin that padlock for whatever reason you want to repin/rekey it (I cant imagine why, it's a new padlock with 2 nice keys) they will usually charge $1 dollar per medeco pin, so 6 key pins, 6 top pins, probably gonna come out at $25 with labor to repin your padlock to a new set of keys, then charge you $10 to $15 dollars per additional key.

Hope that helps, but I'm not sure what the project is, so maybe it wont help...

Squelchtone is correct, except you do not need to go to a Medeco dealer for that particular key to be copied. Most any locksmith can handle that duplicate for you and possibly the rekeying. Even if they don't have a Medeco kit they could in a pinch swap a few pins around and originate new keys.

Evan, Squelchtone, Cledry:

Thanks you guys.
Good info, as always.
Every time I visit this forum I learn something new.
Locks are an old hobby of mine for which I have been way to busy to enjoy over the last 15 years.
I'll leave this project alone.
I have lots of other loose ends in box under my bench to keep me occupied while layed-up.
I'll try not to be a nuisance... :)

I actually bought the pins/keys/card off of ebay, with the intention of rekeying one of my medeco cylinders for fun. (not a pro, I wouldn't use one of my practice locks to actually protect anything). And, yes the keyway is different. Now, I need to find a plug that fits the keyway. But, unlike Best where all the strange keyways have letters and you can find nice charts to figure out what a keyway is, Medeco doesn't seem to label theirs so well....

Hoping someone can tell me what keyway this is, and maybe help me find a plug that the key fits in. Sorry the picture is a little blurry, cell phone cameras aren't the best.

Does anyone have a good place to find descriptions of Medeco keyways?

thanks

If you have the card, it should have the keyway on it. It's the first two characters on the card before the code - specifically the alpha character. In the pic of the card above, 1G denotes the keyway which Medeco refers to as G3. This would be part of the part number if you we're to order a replacement plug. This is also referred to as the 'Gold' keyway or program and any Medeco dealer should have access to parts and keys.

Also, if you're looking to re-key by the book, the eBay kit above doesn't include the proper drivers which could make it vulnerable to some very rare and sophisticated attacks. Not a practical concern really but interesting to me at least.

Thanks for the info. Medecos are really interesting to me for some reason...

Medecos (and maybe assa's) that I've seen seem to have multiple lengths of top pins and balance the length somewhat. But, these are the older key pins where the sidebar grove goes all the way down. I'm not too worried about the security because of that. It's more for that magic day when I can pick a Medeco than for keeping anything safe. And Medeco pin kits are very expensive...
