Commando Padlock Shackle removing key

Postby fgarci03 » 10 Jul 2013 17:57

Hello!

Commando Locks have been talked about here, so I'm only going to focus on something I did.
I recently got one of those, and was informed that you can remove the shackle by opening the lock CW, rotating the shackle 180º, and picking the lock CCW.

That was very cool to find out.
But I'm a strange person, and I wanted a key for it.

The regular key won't do it because the keyway has some lips that prevent the key to rotate backwards:

So, in order to do that, I had the key copied. Then I filed the part of it where it binded against those lips:

Success!

Now I can disassemble it without having to pick it (not that I mind to pick it anyway, but I like to have the keys ):

Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

Nicely done, fgarci03. :-)

Did that a while back, too. But you have to admit, it sure looks to weaken the key. Would not wan to do that if these had return springs on the plug.

Yep that is true. But I only did it to have it on the collection. I wouldn't use it as a key for the lock, as it would break with a little rough usage!

If the plug had return springs.. Well... I would have to pick my way in everytime

Glad you received the locks! Thanks for the tip on how to break filed keys with a return spring....I'll keep that in mind. I have to admit I have a filed key too...
