Ilco Bump Halt: does it make picking harder too?

Postby thyyon » 30 Jul 2013 20:14

Allegedly these pins/springs make bumping a lot more difficult, as advertised; but I have read a comment or two here that they also make picking a lot more difficult, although the manufacturer doesn't make any claims regarding this I don't think.

Can anyone who's had experience with these pins speak to whether or not they make picking harder?

I didn't try them, yet. But i found this: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=56298&view=viewpoll

There is a picture in that thread that clearly show's the design.
It seems to me it will not stop picking the lock. Stronger springs give a different feel, but that's all i see in it. The extra piece of metal that goes into the spring might help the pins to bounce back faster, but i don't see how that would stop picking.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Haven't tried picking against these, yet. I'm currently in a transitional state. Might load a couple of these into a dedicated practice lock and see if I can shed some light here; what the heck, I'll do it now. In the meantime, here's what it says on the packaging (not case-sensitive):

This kit is specifically designed for use in Ilco mortice and rim cylinders. There are 10 sets in this bag. Only 1 pin/spring is required per cylinder for bump resistance. Up to 2 pins/springs can be installed for even more security.

Assemble the Bump Halt by inserting top pin into the spring, then placing above the shortest bottom pin(s) in the cylinder. This combination can be used in any location, however try to avoid using the first pinhole. Best results if used on bottom pin #3 or shorter.

The bump resistant components in this kit were designed by Ilco, patent pending by Ilco, for use in Ilco brass cylinder. If this kit works on any other brand cylinders, it is not known by Ilco and has not been tested.

I got a few of these pins and springs after reading about them in Deviant Ollam's book Practical Lock Picking. I utilize these pins in some of my security applications and have also tried picking a lock with two of these pins in it. I would compare these to the Schlage T-Pins found in the newer F-Series key-in-knob locks but somewhat harder to manipulate due to the substantially stronger spring (the springs Schlage provides with their T-pins are flimsy even compared to Schlage's standard springs). You don't get the counter rotation like you might with a Schlage spool pin, but these pins can be overcome with practice.

I have an ilco mortise cylinder with the bump halt pin in the 5th position. I had originally bought the cylinder for practice picking the y-1 keyway. I had no idea that it had bump hault or even what it was. So I commence picking and after about 5 minutes I had all the pins set (I thought) but it wouldn't turn. So I reset all the pins and I started from the back and I noticed a pin not wanting to set. I reset again and I started with the #5 pin. I kept constant pressure on the pin with the pick and varied my tension until I felt the pin depress in , I followed up with the other pins and it finally turned. I tore the plug apart and reassembled it in a different combination. I started with the bump hault again and it worked out again in no time. The faster i can figure out where the bump vault pin is the faster I can pick it. Anyways see how it goes with your locks
Never stick your pick in another's keyhole without permission!!
