Peterson cases

Postby andy17 » 28 Sep 2011 22:26

I'm planning on buying a few Peterson picks and was thinking of getting a case at the same time. I like the idea of an all-calfskin one. Has anyone got either the Elite or the G-3 Trifold case and like to comment on them (quality, any problems, value for money, etc)?

Thanks, Andy

I was recently looking at their cases, too. At first I was thinking of the all calfskin cases, like you, but then thought the durability of the cow hide, on the outside, might make for a more durable case.

Perhaps some input from the other users would help make the decision easier, though.

I have the Professional II set, which I believe came with an outer made of thicker cowskin and the pockets of calfskin. I've had it for 5 years and not a rip or tare or missing stitch. The leather has become supple over the years and sometimes when I fold the case up, it wants to roll up, which I do wish it was a roll up, but I dont mind it folding in half.

You'll enjoy whichever case you choose,

Thanks for the reply, Squelchtone.

Gilduran, a cow hide outer would give more protection certainly, so it's probably a wiser choice for transporting the picks around, but I have an all-glove-leather roll-up for my calligraphy pens (my other hobby) and because it's just so nice and soft, I'm still leaning towards the Elite case. Good luck with your choice.

I realize that this is a necro thread; I'm still not sure of the protocol on whether to make a new thread if an old one exists on the same topic. If any of the moderators or more established members would like to give me some guidance on this I would appreciate it.

Anyway, like the OP, I am also buying some individual Peterson picks (about 13) and plan on buying one of the tri-fold cases since all of my current cases are full. This thread didn't really resolve the original question, so hopefully in the intervening years some more opinions have developed on the difference between the all calfskin and the cowhide/calfskin mix. I was hoping to ask andy and gilduran how their cases turned out, but it seems that neither one of them has logged on in more than a year. :(

Squelchtone, you mentioned that you'd like for your case to roll up, and I have the same sentiments. I'm assuming that if I go for the tri-fold over the bi-fold that I will be closer to achieving that end.

I have both the calfskin tri-fold and the cowskin/calfskin tri-fold. Both are excellent cases, and I don't find any extra protection offered by the cowskin at all. They are both really bomb-proof durable. The calfskin is much more supple, and I prefer it for that reason. But saying that, I love both of them. The cowskin case is noticeable thicker when it's folded up.

Personally, I think neither of the above, or the bi-fold, would be suitable for rolling. There needs to be far more flexibility in the cases for that, as well as a few millimeters gap between the pockets to allow for the rolling.

At first, I found with both cases that size of the individual tool pockets made it really tough to get the picks out because they're stitched very narrow. However, over time the leather stretches a little and molds to the pick handles, and the nap on the inside of the leather becomes depressed. Then the whole thing is perfect, and the picks are snug.

I did have a stitch come loose on one of the tri-folds a few weeks after getting it. After sending a pic of it to Petersons they had no hesitation about shipping me a replacement.

In all, I don't think I could wish for better cases. These things will probably out last me.

Thank you for asking.

As a general rule, if you're reviving a long dead thread to do little else other than say "cool post dude" or something equally trivial, it's frowned upon as necroing.

However if you have something constructive to add which has not already been covered in the thread, or if you have a new question that is relevant to the topic, it's fine to bring an old thread back from the dead rather than clutter the forum with another thread on virtually the same topic.

Thanks for the clarification MBI.

MrAnybody, great response. I'm actually making a bulk order for myself and two other people. I ended up deciding on the full calfskin tri-fold, while one of my friends got the cowhide and calfskin tri-fold. I placed my order at lunch today, and Barb, the Peterson customer service rep, said that the order should arrive in 3 to 4 business days. I'll keep everyone posted on how the cases turn out.

Well...? We wait with baited breath. I'm placing an order as well and am waffling between the Elite and Professional. I'm assuming the Professional would have more of a wallet feel to it while the Elite would feel more like a pair of driving gloves.
