Micrometer Recommendation?

Postby ThatOtherGuy » 25 Aug 2013 4:14

Couldn't think of a place to ask, so decided on here.

I need a good recommendation on a micrometer. My current one just isn't accurate enough I don't think, only goes to 0.xx rather than 0.xxx
Trying to sort my pins and it's kind of annoying to only get a 0.16 when I know it's supposed to be 0.165. I may just be being picky though, you tell me.

Either way, picky or not, got any decent recommendations? All mine are flimsy and I'd like an upgrade :)

I got a really nice digital caliper from a coworker who was retiring. It is a Fowler and works perfect for what I need.

I do have one of those gauges like you linked to, it was made by Lab and is for Falcon and Weiser. I don't think they make them anymore. It's a nice solid metal plate.

If you are just sorting pins, the HF would be fine.

If you want a true slide caliper then look at Mitutoyo, Fowler and Starrett. They are considerably more than the HF version but much more accurate and better built.

True, but the HF one works good enough for what we do. The others you can find used sometimes at pawn shops and gun shows.

I have that exact Harbor Freight micrometer. It's actually pretty solidly built, and as far as I know it's also accurate.

I worked as a machinist up til last year for about 3 years. We had to have audits for calibration yearly to keep working. Most of our stuff was Mitutoyo, but after a fair number came up missing, our cal officer started buying HF stuff. It worked fine, and this was production, where we used these every day.

I meant to post that I indeed carry a HF in my service van for daily use. It's accurate enough for what I need and if it comes up missing or I step on it, it's no great loss.

I have more expensive tools in my personal shop, but no reason to spend the $$$ on one for the road.

@dll932: +1 on Mitutoyo.
Mitutoyo and Brown and Sharpe were the best I saw in our machine shop. I had my boss get me a bundle deal for an Insize set with a Micrometer, Calipers, and a rule and take it out of my paycheck, fetched it new for under $200. The Insize were as good as the others, but I noticed you had to zero them much more than the Browne and Sharpe's.

I third the Mitutoyo. The great thing about them is that they don't burn through the little batteries like the cheap ones do.

I have to ask; who sorts pins? Pins are cheap and really shouldn't be re-used. An exception might be if you are rekeying a hundred American padlocks, you might want to save the pins from the new locks but they are colour coded.
