Interesting Lock From Taiwan

Postby phrygianradar » 17 Jun 2013 23:15

Hey everyone, I just got this strange lock off the internet.

http://s1358.photobucket.com/user/Natha ... 0.jpg.html

As you can see, it is called a "Maxpro" made by G-con(?). It's pretty hefty, 60mm, but like most Chinese locks, is also extremely crumby feeling. It does not have the feel of quality, but I thought it was an interesting concept so I bought a couple of them. The keys are strange; they are like a disc detainer, but as you push them in, you can feel springs in the lock stretching to their appropriate places before it can be turned. Here are the pictures of what it looks like inside:

http://s1358.photobucket.com/user/Natha ... sort=3&o=2

I took a dremel to the cylinder and am trying to carefully make a cut-away of it, but I don't want to totally destroy it... Might take a while. In fact, I might not be able to do it without springs coming out! It is held together with a little c-clip, and when I took that off, it looked pretty complicated and easily messed up inside. From what I can tell, there are different diameters to the key at different space intervals. When you push the key in, it catches on these rings inside which push little tabs out to cut out spots that will allow it to turn if the correct key is pushed in. I will post some more pictures later on if anyone is interested. I am not real sure what category this lock fits in, but it is most like a disc detainer. Although the lock could be easily defeated by destructive means; and I'm not talking about crowbars or bolt cutters... It is a unique and imaginative cylinder, but the overall design is flawed in a huge way. You can probably see that just by how the cylinder comes out of the lock! Oh well, it is a nice conversation piece to put on my shelf at least.

I tried to search for similar locks on the forum but didn't find any. If this needs to be moved to advanced, go ahead, but I wouldn't trust it on anything that was valuable to me!

Hope you all enjoy!

That's a pretty cool lock. I'd be interested in where you purchased it also if you don't mind posting.
Just a newbie here to learn. Don't mind my overly stupid questions :)

Sure, I would be happy to share all that! They have an eBay store and this link should take you right to the locks:

http://stores.ebay.com/qianjin71786168/ ... 34.c0.m322

They have cheaper disc detainer locks, I got the one called "Mindy" for around nine bucks. The best part is that they don't charge for shipping, so the price of the lock is what you pay. I live in So. Cal. and my order got to me in about ten days. Definitely unique stuff... but like I said before, I would not trust it for any real security. But I bet it would keep an honest man honest.

I forgot to mention something. They all don't come apart like the one I took pictures of. That one had a screw, to my shock, under one of the shackles. After unscrewing it, I still had to pop a metal pin out of the other side to get it to come apart.

No, I have not picked it. I don't expect to either. That "Maxpro" has some pretty strange little lip-like dust covers that obscure the mechanism. It is almost impossible to keep them both open. My wife says it is an erotic lock! Kinda looks like it to me too... If you squint your eyes just right...

But seriously, I have a couple of Ideas of how you could pick it, but I have not put the energy into building my idea. It's not too complicated in my mind, but in real life it may be hard to do. If you check out the pictures one the persons eBay store you can see a nice close up of the key. It's all about those diameters at the proper intervals and then tensioning it... If you get one, let me know what you think. I bet Gordon has already picked one! We could just ask him! Just kidding Gordon!

Have you got a set of shutter tools??
I think these are Peterson tools.
Real handy at keeping the keyway clear for reading and picking.

No, LockDoc, I have been wanting to get a set of them, but haven't yet. The dust cover on this lock is real squirlly feeling. Each side has two springs that keep it shut and it is prone to getting all weird when you wedge it with anything. It would have to be held open at the top and bottom to stay clear. I think it is a cleaver hinderance to manipulation attempts, personally.

It is not that I am 'THAT' good. More that I need a shower 'THAT' bad. The stink opens them. But if it works...

The only one of those locks I have had my grubby paws on I did pick. Used two hook picks, kept at the same height relative to each other, so the spacers are kept flat. Considered making a kind of scissor pick for these, but have not seen another one since.
