Mortise Lock Spindle Removal???

Postby shiprek » 3 Sep 2013 21:15

:?: :?: :?: I am trying to remove a client's mortise lock but can not get the spindles out. This lock was installed in a custom made wood door back in the 80's. I can remove everything but the spindles. They appear to function individually; there is one on the outside and one on the inside. Either spindle will turn approx. 1/4 turn before a pawl inside the lock prevents any further rotation. The interior/exterior spindle do not appear to be continuous thru the door but the pawls block any clear view. I have tried pulling/pushing/turning the spindles from both sides but they will not budge. The spindles are not threaded, they do no not split along their length nor do I believe they are a single shaft. I have tried to research this lock but can not find any similar. Spindle removal does not seem to be standard like one would expect. Any help is appreciated. Thx

The cylinders for the mortise lock say YALE but there are no markings on the mortise lock or strike itself to identify the manufacturer.

Are you removing all of the trim associated with the spindle and both knobs/levers? Some spindles are attached to the trim and come off with it. With all the trim removed some spindles will tilt and unhook from inside the housing. Is there some kind of hollow hub that has to be unscrewed from the lock housing to release the spindle?

We really need the photos to know what we are talking about.

Does the inner spindle have what looks like an eye bolt at the end? If so unscrew that first.
