The ILCO 008 Mini Might key machine is a nice starter machine and here is a tip on how to get the most out of it!

You can convert the ILCO 008 Mini Mite Key Machine to act as a code cutting machine. This simple conversion can allow you to both duplicate and use space and depth keys for the purpose of cutting code keys. It is a very good starting point for beginners since it is cost effective and easily transported.

The ILCO 008 uses a 1/2" diameter shaft and typically comes with a 23RF cutter blade. Replace the 23RF with a 37MC. This is considered a "compromise" cutter blade that will provide a 45 degree angle with a .25 flat.

All you need to do is to obtain some basic space and depth keys and your all set. This is a great conversion if your doing a lot of cam lock key generation, impressioning, or decoding cylinders. Simply and effective. You will earn money to ultimately upgrade to a full fledged code machine.

Jet just came out with a pretty nice micro machine called a JT-9000

Good Luck!

The 008 is a good choice for a start. Mine runs fine plugged into a 150 watt power inverter running off the cigarette lighter in my car.
The only problem I have found is trying to cut some automotive keys. Some of the newer keys have such large plastic bows that there is not enough room for the blank and original to fit and properly gauge at the tip. Mine is an older 008 I don't know if the newer ones have more room.

As stated before don't chintz out on your key machine, you will be better off biting the bullet first off and once you have a couple commercial accounts you will quickly pay off your machine and begin turning a profit. I bought a code machine and a duplicator all in one shot, within the first few weeks I had the two machines pay for themselves and some.

HPC and a Framon II is what I personally use.

I guess you have never tried a quality import from Silca, Börkey, Bianchi they are all very good machines.

Key machines are "prohibited items" on ebay. Don't ask why, I don't know; it's just their own way of being a pain....

(code cutters, hand held clippers and such are also prohibited)

That's a shame. I have 4 or 5 to sell. I guess Craigslist it will be then.

Why not sell them here on the B/S/T section ?

I might do that with the smaller ones. Craigslist has worked so well for the last few machines machines though and the shipping isn't required. We sell a fair bit of heavier stuff such as safes on Craigslist too.

I was looking for a small duplicator I could hide somewhere in my vehicle from prying eyes (I don't have protected parking in a bad part of town) and was asking opinions over at locksmithcommunity.com. I thought the mini speedex fit the bill but they all warned me that the mini speedex burns through belts really fast. They recommended the Rytan RY-45. The nice thing about Rytan is that they will sell you any part that breaks and supply you with exploded views of their creations when you buy them so that you can work on them yourself. In addition, I think they make their stuff in the USA (if that makes a difference to you).

The RY100 is also a pretty cool machine for the money and is quite small. As mentioned before, you could use depth keys to originate keys. What I think would be the bee's knees is to set up some calipers on one side to eliminate the need for depth keys. It would be almost like using metric code cutter cards. Of course you would have to have some way of knowing where the cuts should go so maybe some kind of metal sleeve you could slide over the caliper. Sorry I am just mentally masturbating at this point.
