Durable pick set for short clearance?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Durable pick set for short clearance?

Postby vastopylansi » 15 Sep 2013 18:34

What is a durable pick set that can be used with a lock that has a 3 inch clearance? I can put my hands off to the side but the area directly in front of the lock only has 3 inches of clearance.

I think Petersons picks are too long?
Or should I get a standard but flexible pick set? My hands will be offset to the side by about 4 inches.

Is there a pick gun that has bent needles to do this?
Bump keys probably won't work since I do not know the manufacturer.

I searched online but mostly just found novelty pick sets. Like the credit card picks and pen pick. Those probably are not very durable.

Sounds like the approximate clearance of a pay telephone side lock. What are you trying to pick? Pictures of the lock may help us to understand what tools are needed.

Its the door of a data center. Some idiot put the "server racks" right beside the door. It was a small room and they could still use their hands to open it but the server administrator was fired for mining bitcoins. Apparently he took the keys with him and cannot be contacted

The manager is my bro (small business) and asked me if I could do it and he knows I am a enthusiast. I'm not at the building right now but I can do a mockup. I will upload it in a few minutes

Ahh, I see. You might have to make a pick that will fit. The credit card sets might fit, but are usually not all that great. That is awfully tight clearance.

Please take a few moments to read through the site rules:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1744

"Can you help me unlock item xyz?

No. We do not help you get into specific things. We are not hear to save you money because you are too tight to phone a locksmith. If you are genuine in the learning aspect buy a cheap lock and learn how to pick. Then work your way up. "

I don't blame you for that, but if you read the rules of the site (which most casual visitors do not) you'll see that you've crossed two areas of limitation - firstly that the site is primarily for hobby lockpickers and there's a rule about not picking locks that are in use; and secondly that discussion of high security locks (which means not only locks that are per se designed to be high security but also any locks used to secure valuables, including vending machines, coin boxes, cash/valuables safes and most definitely gun safes) is not allowed in open forum, for obvious reasons.

Assuming what you have presented as your situation is true, some jiggler keys might be your best bet.
That is, if it is a pin tumbler or wafer type lock.

Have you actually looked at the lock. It might have a keycode. Usually simple enough to have a key cut. Best tool for the job. The actual key.
