Keso dimple lock taken apart

Postby lockpickpanda » 5 Oct 2013 10:21

I found two used keso locks online for a cheap price a while ago, and decided to take one apart.
I'm assuming it's a keso 2000 (if someone knows for sure, please let me know)

Image
(As you can see, I tried to tap a screwthread in the housing on the left, and the tap broke; the metal on the inside is just too tough)

Image
Although I haven't been able to pick these yet, there aren't any security pins inside. But some pins are at the sheer line in rest, that makes it tricky.

Image
The key looks more complex than the lock really is; the deep dimple topleft in between two smaller dimples has no purpose in this lock. The same goes for the telescoping looking dimples. I assume they're part of a master keying system.

Image
The housing has no holes for the pins; the toppins and springs go into the bar inserts.

Of course, like always, the real challenge is putting it back together

always nice to see a lock spread out on a table. :)

Some of those springs look like they won't last...

The pins have an interesting shape, like one sided spool. Looks like it would make over-setting a pin feel a bit like a set. I guess it's there to prevent the key pins from falling out of the lock.

The model is a Keso 2000 Omega I believe, could you post a shot of the key from the side? If there is an interactive pin then it's Omega.

The stepped dimple is indeed important in masterkey systems, but keso is sneaky and puts it on non masterkeyed keys as well. (I presume to lock cooler and to make copies a bit harder.)

Ah missed that one, Kesos are one of the highest quality locks I know, they function very well for a long time. Really the ones I can compare are EVVA, Kaba, Gege, Abloy from the top of my head.

I love the clever lock design with the removable brass inserts allowing pin stacks where there is such limited wall space on the sides and bottom of the housing. Thanks for posting the pictures, I don't recall seeing one of these disassembled before.

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately no interactive pin, I would have liked that.

About the springs: they've looked better. It's very easy to make mistakes with the orientation of the parts (up/down left/right), and then things tend to get stuck in the lock. I even ended up having to re-attach one of those springs to a top pin (they're snapped on at the top).

It's a LOT of tricky work to repin, but it's nice to practice single pin picking on a dimple lock. I now only have the front three in, just for the feel.

Two extra notes:
- Taking the lock apart I pried off one of the c-clips, but they can be left completely intact thanks to the modular design.
- The photo with the bars is a bit misleading: one of the bar inserts goes in the other way around, so that left and right pins are half a hole distance apart from each other.

Nice Gut Shots!!! It really reminds me of a Kaba Gemini except the drivers on the Gemini use smaller diameter springs and have a hollow back that the spring sits in.
