where to buy unusual yale mortice lock?

Postby cooperplace » 13 Oct 2013 1:44

Hi, my house built in 1948 has 7 Yale 2-lever internal mortice locks as follows:

backset 2 1/8"
case width 3"
case height 3 3/4"
forend length 5 1/4"
forend width 7/8"

all are now wearing out. Inside the escutcheons it says "Yale no. 300" and "Made in England".

I can't find mortice locks with these measurements anywhere. Most locks seem to have a backset of 2 1/2". If anyone can advise re where I can get them, I'd be very grateful.
thanks

Peter.

Yeah, that won't help him.

Are you in the US or the UK or elsewhere?

In the US there are a few places that offer old mortise locks, such as Van Dykes but they are not very good quality. There isn't much to wear out in your lock that cannot be repaired with a few springs and a bit of grease. The backset will be an issue though if you replace them.

Search for narrow stile bit mortice lock or mortise lock and see what you find.

I'm in Australia. The Yale catalog was the first place I looked but couldn't help.

Maybe I will pull them all apart and grease, etc.

As long as nothing is broken or worn out, (other than springs that you can replace), you can pretty much fix them.
