I think it is only 4 pin so it shouldn't be too hard, I haven't purchased one to pick so I can't give any insight on it. I usually set my budget to around £30 for Padlocks because the cheaper ones don't offer a challenge in my experience.

Quick search of the Forum shows that they are a 4 pin with Spools.. Don't hold me to that ...

Thats the updated version of the Master No.40, which is a clone of the Abus 24/70 Discus padlock.

It makes me sad when Master Lock boasts the following as a feature:

4-pin cylinder for increased pick resistance

Wow, as opposed to what? Some chicken wire or rope? Shame on Master for trying to make it seem like 4 pin tumblers somehow make the lock harder to pick.

OP, what picks are you using and are you a beginner or somewhat experienced?

Are you getting any tell tale signs of a false set, where the lock is almost picked but the plug is hooked by a spool pin that has fallen over? Usually the plug will turn from 12 to 1 and stop sharply.

Thanks

No tell tale signs of false sets. Its been pretty aggravating. Has anyone on here picked one before?

I picked up the M40XD today .. Supposed to be the same lock just smaller... Challenge Accepted !!!

I only messed with it for about 30mins .. but I am also not getting any kind of false set.. Only thing I can figure is that I have a shallow spool pin in Pin #1 that you can barely feel set..When you push on it you get a slight click and a very slight movement out of the TW ... I will keep working on it ..

Don't own one of these guys but I do own a couple disk locks like these. These locks are intended to be harder to pick cause they are often used on storage lockers.

These kinds of locks always have security pins as far as I know. I own a Uhaul disk lock with a yale core. It has several obvious spool pins with deep false sets. I also own a brinks max security disk lock at its spool pins have a very shallow false set.

Try using a hard tension to find the binding pin and then switch to light tension to set the pin. Allow for reverse rotation on the spool pins. I always use bottom of the keyway tension for these guys.

The lock is installed upside down and this will change things if you are used to normal right side up picking. You may want to practice first picking the lock right side up. However eventually you should learn to pick them the right way with the core upside down. Picking a lock upside down involves a different motion of the pick for me. It's more of an exaggerated up move movement on the handle of the pick and pushing on the keypins just slightly off center toward their rear. Hard to explain without showing visually. It like normal pickng but you are exaggerating your motions.

----------------

If you want a real treat get a master lock pro series lock. All 5 pins are shallow spools with a fairly tight keyway.

Thanks for the help .. I am still working on this lock .. I found out that I needed a hook with a much narrower shaft.. So I have progressed a little further.. Problem now is my narrow hook is not strong enough to completely set the spools that I found .. So either back to the grinder or wait for an online order.. Thank though...

--------------------------

I was going to pick up a Master 6850 as my next target when I got side tracked by this lock ..

Well I found out 2 things today ..

1 - If you stick with it long enough the lock will open ..
2 - I take crappy pictures.. (I knew this one already :D :D )

I have manged to open it twice now .. Not sure if the light bulb finally just went off of or if I have just worn the lock out enough that it is easier to open ..
