Has anybody ever seen this key??

Postby earleC_2 » 28 Oct 2013 16:26

I've attached a link...

There are some vintage keys for sale on ebay. Most are LSDA, which I am familiar with.

However there are 3 or 4 that appear to be much older and only say; "S". Has anybody ever heard of or seen this brand? Is "S" a now defunt lock company no longer in business.

I've seen this logo only a few times, so they must be quite rare. Any help is much appreciated, as I would like to know the origins of what I am buying! Thanks in advance!

Best

Thanks, now I wont be able to sleep at night until we figure this out =)

I too have seen that S logo before.. I can only think of a few brands right now, Star, Slaymaker, Segal, JET Silverline, Sears, but more than likely it will be some offshoot of ESP or ILCO. Is there a company called Sterling?

I can't wait till a locksmith weighs in!

Do you remember where you saw the logo? Perhaps that would tell us would the manufacture is.

Thanks for giving it a try!

BTW; I wonder how old this particular brand is?? Looks like it could be in the 50+ category!

Those keys with the S on them don't look that old to me by the finish on them. And since they look to be Chicago K5 keyway as all those keys listed are I would make the guess they are Steelcase blanks which is a office furniture maker.

I've seen plenty of Steelcase brand keys as well. The "S" logo on their key is different from the one stamped on these keys.

This logo is definitely something no longer produced; if I had to guess the vintage looks to be mid-late 1950s.

Thanks for posting! I would like to find out what the manufacture is before I place a bid!

I would say it is not even close to the 50's and is a china knock off of a steelcase furniture lock. If it was a 50's brand key it would have the full name of the company that made it on one side or the other. I would not pay much for those keys. Ask the guy what it says on the back side of those S blanks if it doesn't have a country or makers name or worse has nothing it isn't worth much. That is my opinion. Take it or leave it.

Ok as I said not a chance those S keys are from the 50's.
Here is the origin of these blanks.

1980's & 1990's
The S stands for Southern Lock and Supply

Southern Lock Locations, Corporate Headquarters: P.O. Box 1980, Pinellas Park, FL 33780-1980

So I would pass on all those keys as you can get nice new Ilco that fit Chicago K5 keyway cheap. :D

How did you find out what the "S" stands for?

BTW: Are these still made. If so, why don't we see them more? Are they specialty blanks, etc?

Thanks!

I asked the source the guy selling them. He bought all those blanks in his listing between 1980 an 1990's. They are not seen much as they are only sold by one place in Florida Southern Lock and Supply and to even view anything on their web site you have to fill out a credit form. They are all still made best I can say as the company is still there. Call them if you want. (727) 541-5536 Google Southern Lock and Supply.

Yes, common knowledge around here in Florida where Southern is a big supplier. I used to deal with them a lot in the 1980s. They are still around and doing fine.
