Help with an Abus

Postby kmh » 10 Nov 2013 20:46

Hello, Hopefully this is the right place for this. I will start off by saying I am quite new to most of this so sorry if my information isn't quite correct. For the most part this forum, Google, and YouTube, are my instructors. Well that and just ripping things a part and seeing how they work =).

I recently purchased a lot of Abus 83 padlocks on ebay, 2 of which are 83/80's that Abus's website says uses Scandinavian Oval cylinders. Well I picked them open and removed the cylinders but, they didn't appear to look like the Scandinavian. I did some searching around on Google and it seems they might be actually be Australian Oval Cylinders. Looking at Abus's site it is an identical match to their 570 oval cylinder.

I am hoping to obtain some key blanks for these cylinders so I can re-pin them as the pins that were in them are identical to the ones I took out of the Schlage cylinders from my other 83's, just different springs. I am hoping one of you might have some experience with these and might better know what key I need and where to obtain them at. It is a 6 pin cylinder.

Looking through Ilco catalogs there are quite a few that look close such as (key blank codes are from Ilco's catalog not sure of actual name for them) Lockwood LK1, Whitco WO2 and Gainsborough GR7 which are Australian keys but, also Kwikset has some that are really close as well. Kwikset's KW1 fits the lock but the fit is sloppy and is also only 5 pins rather than 6.

Here are some pictures of the cylinder so hopefully someone can help me narrow things down.

Thanks in advance for any help =)

Hey kmh!

Don't know if this is going to be usefull, but that keyway sure looks like an inverted image of Schlage. SC1 to be more precise (I think). Maybe that same one is also used by them so you could get blanks from probably any locksmith supplier.

Let's wait for someone more experienced to chime in :)
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

The 83-80 that I got a few months ago had a Schlage SC1 keyway. But it did not have the Scandinavian oval, as that does.

I was bidding on that lot of two display boards of ABUS padlocks, too! Congratulations on winning them. If you might be interested in selling/trading a few of those, PM me!

P.S. - that IS a Schlage SC1 keyway on a Scandinavian Oval cylinder. He is just showing the back end of the cylinder, not where the key enters.

Just by chance, since it is from a display board, try the bitting from my key. 63673. Just because there are six pin chambers does not mean all are used, and demo locks are usually done cheaply.

Thanks Gordon, yeah that's the lot lol. 17 of them are Schlage 5pin cylinders and 1 is a 6pin all in the SC1 keyway. 2 of them had some sort of cheap Best styled IC cores which I raked to control without a custom wrench and then these 2 with the Australian ovals.

I've began making custom pins for the Schlage cylinders and tapped them. A couple of them I have started playing around with modding.

I might be interested in a couple of trades down the road after I've had time to play with these and such. I plan on eventually selling some of the duplicates to help get my money back that I have invested in this hobby but, trades could be fun to =).

But ok, back on topic, The SC1 is of course facing the wrong direction but, even trying to insert it from the back, the shape is way off. Like I said the KW1 fits, it's just very sloppy and to short. The warding is just a bit off in the center of the keyway.

Here's some pics from the Ilco catalog of the closest ones I can find as of the moment. Each is very close but, upon study are slightly off. Not to mention I have not been able to find any of these keys other than the KW1.

Definitely looks like a strong contender and that one seems easy enough to find. Thanks =)

Op is correct, not Scandinavian oval, probably as Australian. I've only ever seen that format on Australian bi lock culls before.

Silca ref is LW4 (or LW5 if 6 pin). Aussie 570 pattern for sure.

I have code cut keys if you wish to repin or blanks if you cannot source elsewhere.

Thanks aussielocky, that's extremely appreciated. I might take you up on that offer if I end up not having any luck tracking some down.
