Accuracy of Framon 2? Is it really 1/2 thou?

Hi guys,

I've been looking around at various code cutting options and have seen a digital version of the Framon 2. I was surprised to see the claim of 0.0005" accuracy.

Looking at the machine, those chinese DRO assemblies do not have accuracies of 1/2 thousands of an inch.

Anyone have the 2D version who can comment?

I've had the 2d and sold it. .0005" tolerance i am not sold on with the 2d.

The framon 2 was more accurate for me and an awesome machine.

With any type of tool like this you have to remember to dial the backlash out when using it (always dial "up" to your number).

I agree with backlash compensation but those cheap, Chinese digital calipers just don't have that level of accuracy. From the pictures of the 2D I've seen, it looks like they threw a couple Harbour Freight $9.99 8" calipers onto a homemade X-Y stage.

You're exactly right on the digital readouts. They are cheap on the 2D. I know the readouts are not accurate down to repeatable .0005" because when i would start the machine and zero the readout, after cutting a few keys if I come back to "zero" it read either .001" or -.001".

If one wanted to dump a bunch of cash into the machine i am sure you could mod some starrett or mitutoyo DRO's and get close to the stated accuracy but who wants to do that .

I wont be cutting them out on laser becouse i found out lockpicking is illegal in my country and i dont want to get into trouble. I think laser cutter or more probable water jet cutter (it gives smooth edges while these from laser need refining) is what they use to produce lockpicks you can buy.
